About the role

Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater collection systems and related facilities. This position is responsible for ensuring the proper functioning of the City's wastewater infrastructure, including pipes, pumps, lift stations, and other related equipment.

Responsibilities

• Operates, inspects, maintains, and repairs wastewater collection systems, including pipes, manholes, lift stations, and related equipment.
• Performs preventative maintenance on wastewater collection system components to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
• Responds to emergency calls related to wastewater system failures, spills, or backups; takes appropriate corrective action.
• Conducts routine inspections of wastewater infrastructure to identify potential issues or needed repairs.
• Cleans and maintains wastewater collection system components, including jetting, rodding, and vacuuming of pipes and manholes.
• Operates and maintains specialized equipment, such as vacuum trucks, jetters, and CCTV inspection systems.
• Assists in the installation and repair of new wastewater collection system infrastructure.
• Documents work performed, including maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections, using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
• Ensures compliance with all applicable safety regulations and procedures while performing work.
• Participates in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge related to wastewater system operations and maintenance.
• Provides excellent customer service to residents and businesses regarding wastewater-related issues.
• May be required to work outside of normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to respond to emergencies or perform scheduled maintenance.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Valid Arizona driver's license.
• One (1) year of experience in the operation, maintenance, or repair of wastewater collection systems or related field (for Utility Systems Technician I).
• Two (2) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, or repair of wastewater collection systems or related field (for Utility Systems Technician II).
• Certification as a Wastewater Collection System Operator by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) within one (1) year of hire (for Utility Systems Technician I) or at the time of hire (for Utility Systems Technician II).
• Knowledge of wastewater collection system components, operations, and maintenance practices.
• Ability to operate and maintain specialized equipment, such as vacuum trucks, jetters, and CCTV inspection systems.
• Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, and schematics related to wastewater collection systems.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights, as well as in various weather conditions.
• Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, up to 50 pounds.

Pay

Utility Systems Technician I: $22.15 - $29.90 per hour

Utility Systems Technician II: $24.36 - $32.90 per hour

Schedule

• Full-time position.
• Typically works Monday through Friday, with occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed for emergencies or scheduled maintenance.
• On-call rotation may be required.
