About the role

The Chancellor oversees and coordinates leadership for a community college district with two colleges—Columbia College (4,000 students) and Modesto Junior College (25,000 students). The Chancellor provides long-range planning to ensure the District’s educational quality and fiscal stability, establishes and maintains relationships with community representatives, state and federal agencies, and advances student learning and success while upholding institutional integrity.

The Chancellor reports directly to the Yosemite Community College District Board of Trustees and delegates authority to Vice-Chancellors for district administration and to College Presidents for college operations.

Responsibilities

  • Advises the Board of Trustees on governance practices, policy development, fiscal oversight, collective bargaining, strategic planning, and legal matters.
  • Supervises and evaluates Vice-Chancellors and College Presidents.
  • Strengthens governance, leadership, and advocacy throughout the District.
  • Provides leadership in planning and developing faculty and staff.
  • Strengthens planning and accountability in colleges and the District office.
  • Guides and supports compliance with accountability standards and requirements.
  • Supports the use of research and institutional data in decision-making.
  • Leads comprehensive revision and update of strategic planning processes.
  • Strengthens fiscal resources to support critical programs and services.
  • Maintains and advances high-quality, accessible student learning opportunities.
  • Reorganizes and streamlines District central services to better support the colleges.
  • Maintains and strengthens Human Resources and employee relations.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university (required).
  • Two to three years of senior-level administrative leadership, preferably at the community college level (required).
  • Earned doctorate or other appropriate terminal degree (preferred).
  • Two years of experience as a President or Superintendent/Chancellor (preferred).
  • Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and sensitivity to their diverse needs.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the community college mission and key issues in higher education.
  • Successful faculty experience at the college level.
  • Experience in leadership, management, and development, preferably in a multi-campus or multi-college district.
  • Strong understanding of complex financial issues and ability to allocate resources equitably.
  • Proven ability to secure additional funding through advocacy, grants, and private/donor support.
  • Experience in planning, developing, constructing, and modernizing college facilities.
  • Understanding of the District’s role in regional accreditation.
  • Accessible and visible to all constituents, with strong collaboration skills across students, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Strong vision, high energy, integrity, and honesty.
  • Commitment to academic excellence, student success, and motivating others to provide high-quality programs and services.
  • Effective communication skills, including speaking, writing, and listening.
  • Consensus-building leadership style that empowers others through teamwork and trust.

  • Articulate spokesperson for the District at local, statewide, and national levels; politically astute with advocacy skills.
  • Support for quality academic and co-curricular programs, including student leadership, athletics, fine arts, and extracurricular activities.
  • Advocacy for student support services and development programs as critical to student success.
  • Support for partnerships between colleges and business, industry, cultural entities, and civic organizations.
  • Understanding of technology’s role in institutional effectiveness, teaching, learning, and administrative support.
  • Commitment to expanding the colleges’ contributions to their communities and strengthening district-wide relations.
  • Ability to sustain a unified district environment while supporting the unique qualities of each college.

Physical and Mental Standards

  • Mobility: Ability to sit for long periods, move about an office, stand occasionally, and reach above and below desk level.
  • Dexterity: Fine manipulation sufficient to operate a keyboard, handle papers, write, and take notes.
  • Lifting: Occasional lifting of papers, files, equipment, and materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Visual Requirements: Close vision sufficient to read files, documents, and computer screens; ability to adjust focus frequently.
  • Hearing/Talking: Ability to hear normal speech, speak and hear on the telephone, and speak in person.
  • Emotional/Psychological Factors: Ability to make decisions, concentrate, handle frequent contact with others (including public contact), and meet deadlines.

Schedule

Work is generally performed in a standard office environment. Evening and weekend hours may often be required.
