Chairperson - Assoc/Full Clinical Professor

The University of Kansas School of Pharmacy is seeking an individual to lead the Department of Pharmacy Practice to support the instruction, research, and clinical mission across three campus locations, while continuing and enhancing the reputation and quality of the program. This full-time, 12-month, Unclassified Academic Staff position as either an Associate or Full Clinical Professor is located in Lawrence, Kansas and serves at the pleasure of and reports directly to the Dean of Pharmacy.

About the Role

This position provides the opportunity to remain engaged in teaching, research, scholarship, and service to further academic interests. Rank determinations are based upon qualifications, professional performance, research, and service experience sufficient to qualify for the appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Clinical Professor.

Responsibilities

• Administration (50%)
  • Effective execution of University policies at the Departmental level.
  • Leadership and oversight in all Departmental activities including faculty recruitment, retention, and development.
  • Adjudication of personnel matters and service as the administrative representative for grievance procedures for the Department.
  • Oversight and enhancement of all Departmental resources across multiple campuses.
  • Supervision and annual evaluation of faculty across multiple campuses in the areas of teaching, research, clinical practice, and service.
  • Supervision and annual evaluation of support staff.
  • Appointment of adjunct faculty.
  • Review and modify, in collaboration with the faculty, the strategic plan for the Department in the areas of teaching, research, clinical practice, and service.
  • Development and support of appropriate resources and faculty sites for School and Graduate programs through frequent and effective communication with the Dean of the School of Pharmacy and other deans and administrators.
  • Development and enhancement of research, clinical, and educational relationships between the Department and its allied units within the University as well as appropriate public, private, or government institutions and agencies.
  • Preparation and submission of the annual Departmental budget in collaboration with the Department of Pharmacy Practice Office Manager.
  • Management of all Departmental funds in accordance with School and University budgetary guidance.
  • Initiate annual fundraising efforts to support Departmental needs.
  • Attendance and completion of University required trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Pharmacy.
• Teaching (20%)
  • Teaching responsibilities will be determined based on department needs, with normal teaching load not exceeding the equivalent of 2 credit hours of instruction each academic year.
  • Responsibilities may include coordination and instruction of didactic courses in the School of Pharmacy curriculum for the professional Pharm.D. program.
  • Hold regular office hours and advise and mentor professional degree-seeking students.
• Research (20%)
  • Conduct research and scholarship on an ongoing basis, defining research focus and seeking internal/external funding.
  • Develop and maintain an active research program, collaborating within the department and with other healthcare disciplines.
  • Publish and present completed research in peer-reviewed journals with national or international stature.
• Service (10%)
  • Support the Profession, University, School of Pharmacy, and Department through involvement and leadership roles with various committees and organizations.
  • May include holding elected positions in professional organizations and serving on local, state, and national professional organization committees.
  • Serve as an adviser in supporting student organizations within the School and referee for granting agencies, journals, and professional association meeting materials.

Requirements

• For appointment at rank of Associate Clinical Professor:
  • A terminal degree in pharmacy (e.g., PharmD degree from an ACPE-accredited school; for pre-2000 graduates, a BS degree is considered terminal).
  • Eligible for appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level.
  • Licensed to practice pharmacy in the State of Kansas or eligible to obtain Kansas licensure within six months of employment.
  • Minimum of 3 years' work experience as a pharmacist in a practice setting.
  • An established record of research and service evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, securing external sources of funding, and/or presentations.
  • Evidence of a strong record of teaching and mentoring professional degree-seeking students, graduate students, or pharmacy residents.
  • Documented leadership experience in developing and enhancing relationships with community partners.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills demonstrated through application materials, interview, and references that reflect experience in creating collegial work environments.
• For appointment at rank of Full Clinical Professor:
  • All of the above qualifications for Associate Clinical Professor.
  • Minimum of 6 years' work experience as a pharmacist in a practice setting.
  • Demonstrated excellence in research, service, and teaching consistent with applicable rank.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as an academic department chair.
• Experience with academic budgeting.
• Experience managing a team across multiple locations.
• Experience leading in a newly unionized academic environment.
