Department Summary

The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth (UNT Health) invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Genetics. This is an opportunity for an accomplished scientist and academic leader to guide one of UNT Health's most collaborative and research-intensive departments at a time of institutional momentum. As UNT Health continues to invest in biomedical discovery, translational science, simulation, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the next Chair will play a central role in advancing research, developing faculty, preparing future scientists, and shaping the department's long-term strategic direction.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Biomedical and Translational Sciences, the Chair will provide academic, scientific, and administrative leadership for a department recognized for its strengths in microbiology, immunology, genetics, cancer biology, and translational research. The successful candidate will maintain an active, externally funded research program while fostering a collaborative culture that supports innovation, mentorship, educational excellence, and scientific discovery.

This is an opportunity to lead a department with exceptional faculty, diverse scientific expertise, robust graduate education programs, and a strong commitment to improving human health through research and education. The next Chair will have the opportunity to strengthen interdisciplinary collaborations, expand externally funded research, recruit and mentor outstanding faculty, and unite the department around a shared vision for national prominence.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD, MD, DO or equivalent terminal degree in microbiology, immunology, genetics, or a closely related biomedical discipline
  • Eligibility for appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure in CBTS
  • Employees in this job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated record of sustained extramural research funding
  • Evidence of effective leadership, administration, and mentorship in an academic or research-intensive environment
  • Strong commitment to education and trainee development
