Chair, Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine
About the role
The Department Chair provides strategic leadership, academic direction, and administrative oversight to advance the department's mission across medical education, research, patient care, and community health. The clinical footprint of the department resides within the Rowan-Virtua NeuroMusculoskeletal Institute (NMI), a multidisciplinary center that integrates osteopathic manipulative medicine, advanced pain management, rehabilitation medicine, and substance use disorder treatments to optimize patient quality of life.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Curricular Excellence & Academic Leadership
- Champion of Osteopathic Identity: Serve as the institutional voice for osteopathic identity and history, inspiring graduates to become passionate, ethical stewards of the profession.
- Curriculum Development: Lead the design, continuous assessment, and quality improvement of the four-year undergraduate OPP/OMM curriculum.
- Best Practices & Safety: Oversee instructional design and safety protocols across all training spaces to maintain top educational and clinical standards.
- National Board Alignment: Align all lectures, syllabi, and exams with the NBOME blueprint to maximize student success on COMLEX-USA and COMAT.
- Educational Expansion & Global Engagement: Embed OMM across clinical specialties and drive trainee participation in national and international osteopathic forums, research, and advocacy.
- GME Collaboration: Partner with the Virtua Health ONMM3 residency program to create a seamless continuum from undergraduate to graduate training.Clinical Operations & NMI Care Delivery
- Multidisciplinary Alignment: Partner with the NMI Director to optimize clinical workflows, match provider strengths to patient panels, and support specialized care programs.
- Quality & Productivity Metrics: Manage clinical productivity (wRVUs), maintain high patient satisfaction, and implement quality improvements aligned with Virtua Medical Group standards.
- Inpatient Consultative Growth: Expand inpatient ONMM consultation services at regional hospitals (including Virtua Voorhees) to enhance trainee clinical exposure.Faculty Governance & Active Mentorship
- Chief Mentor: Balance faculty workloads, design professional development pathways, and coach junior faculty through the academic promotion and tenure pipeline.
- Scholarly Activity Cultivation: Cultivate a culture of inquiry by driving clinical trials, supporting peer-reviewed publications, and encouraging faculty grant participation.
- Recruitment & Retention: Recruit, credential, develop and retain top-tier, board-certified OMM specialists and preceptors across the Stratford and Sewell campuses, and SOM’s Hub Sites.Financial, Administrative & Regulatory Stewardship
- Fiscal Responsibility: Manage the annual operating budget to balance academic resource needs with clinical revenue generation.
- Accreditation Maintenance: Ensure all departmental operations and policies fully comply with COCA accreditation standards.
- Institutional Service: Serve on the Executive Council and key committees to advocate for osteopathic identity across the broader health system.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate is an accomplished and visionary leader who holds a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from a COCA-accredited college of osteopathic medicine and is Board Certified by either the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (NMM/OMM) or a closely related specialty with equivalent expertise.
Applicants must hold, or be immediately eligible for, an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the state of New Jersey.
To be considered, candidates must possess a minimum of five (5) years of progressive, professional leadership experience within an osteopathic medical school setting, demonstrating the academic and scholarly achievements necessary to meet institutional criteria for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor (preferred).
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of departmental or program management, including direct experience overseeing budgets, navigating matrixed health system hierarchies, and aligning curricula with national board standards.
This position requires exceptional interpersonal, conflict-resolution, and team-building skills, with a demonstrated ability to actively mentor and advocate for faculty, collaborate with a varied constituency, and drive institutional innovation.
Active engagement in regional or national professional osteopathic organizations is highly desirable.
Pay
Salary In compliance with the State of New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the salary range for this position is $235,000 to $265,000. Placement into the range is determined by the candidate’s qualifications, professional experience and other factors.
