Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Technician
The Opportunity
Our projects range from building erection reviews, fabrication shop audits, condition assessments, repair and reinforcement monitoring, to maintenance and warranty reviews for existing roadway structures and bridges. We also have a wide assortment of clients, but our primary focus areas are building (D1.1) and DOT (D1.1 or D1.5) code related. Depending on the project, your position could include a range of work activities. Work opportunities would include, but may not be limited to, daily site visits to local jobsites, assessing highway structures throughout the state, assisting with materials testing on sites or within one of our laboratories, or occasional options to travel to perform evaluations and testing at project sites or within manufacturing or fabrication facilities in other states.
Responsibilities
- Perform bolted and welded structural connection reviews on building construction sites, fabrication shop inspections, and additional specialty review and non‑destructive testing.
- Perform NDT of welds, structural members, ancillary structures, or various parts and components. Common NDT methods include ultrasonic testing (UT) and magnetic‑particle testing (MT), with less frequent dye‑penetrant testing (PT).
- Field witnessing, sample collection and lab testing as needed, including testing of welder performance and procedure qualifications, high‑strength bolts and anchor rods, load testing of assemblies, etc.
- Occasionally assist with other service reviews or testing, as needed, to support other groups within SME.
Requirements
- A current American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
- Quality Control (QC) or Quality Assurance (QA) related NDT experience with one or more current ASNT SNT‑TC‑1A, Level II certification for UT, MT, and/or PT; or relevant NDT training‑log documentation that would qualify for pursuing examination and certification in these methods.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Proficient with commonly used computer programs and phone apps (e.g., Microsoft Word/Excel, PDFs, email, web browsers, maps, etc.).
- Ability to handle physical demands, such as lifting and carrying equipment (up to 50 lb repetitively), regularly wearing specialty Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for extended periods (e.g., full‑face respirator, coveralls, harnesses, unique gloves/boots), walking on uneven ground, working in various weather conditions, and traveling to different locations.
- Comfortable working at heights (ladders, scaffolding, platforms, aerial lifts, swing stages, exposed floor levels or roofs) in adherence to required fall‑arrest/restraint safety protocols.
- Willingness to work within confined spaces (tanks, vaults, tunnels, trenches) as defined by OSHA requirements.
- Travel to sites throughout the state, with occasional travel to other states; occasional overtime, weekend work, and out‑of‑town, overnight travel may be required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with clients, team members, and supervisors, conveying technical information clearly and professionally.
- Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize, manage workloads, and maintain accurate, detailed record‑keeping of field observations, safety concerns, and problem resolutions.
- Effective interpersonal skills to build rapport with clients and team members, fostering positive working relationships and a customer‑centric approach.
- Ability to adapt to change, handle frequent interruptions, and react productively to changing conditions.
- Aptitude for identifying and resolving complex technical problems in the field using critical thinking and logical reasoning.
- Demonstrated ethical conduct, maintaining confidentiality and strict adherence to safety protocols and guidelines.
Additional Considerations
- DOT D1.5 code‑related fabrication inspection experience preferred, but not required.
- Basic construction competencies—including ability to determine location from surface features and landmarks using surveys, road maps, aerial photos, topographic and geologic maps; understanding construction stakes and utility markings; or general knowledge of construction activities, inspection, or testing—preferred, but not required.
