Responsibilities
- Observe, analyze, and record patients' participation, reactions, and progress during treatment sessions, modifying treatment programs as needed.
- Develop treatment plan to meet needs of patient, based on patient’s initial admission assessment, patient interests and objectives of therapy.
- Counsel and encourage patients to develop leisure activities.
- Confer with members of treatment team to plan and evaluate therapy programs.
- Conduct therapy sessions to improve patients' mental and physical well-being.
- Instruct patient in activities and techniques, such as sports, dance, music, art or relaxation techniques, designed to meet their specific physical or psychological needs.
- Obtain information from medical records, medical staff, family members and the patients themselves to assess patients' capabilities, needs and interests.
- Displays concern and initiative. Is resourceful and calm in emergencies. Is prompt and efficient with minimal absences. Cooperates and maintains good rapport with nursing staff, medical staff, other departments, and visitors.
- Serves as a liaison between patients, families, and the treatment team.
- Absorb and implement changes in the treatment plan as necessary.
- Assist with other tasks as directed by supervisor.
Qualifications
- Graduate of a baccalaureate degree program with a specialization in therapeutic recreation, including the completion of a supervised internship as part of the program.
- Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certification required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Handle with Care (HWC) certification required, to be obtained during orientation.
- Completion of a supervised internship required.
- Additional experience in a behavioral health setting preferred.
- Demonstrated competence to practice as a therapeutic recreation specialist and/or recreation therapist.
- Able to lead and motivate people. Good planning and organizational skills. Creative and resourceful in their therapy techniques. Good computer skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated organizational skills.
