HOURS & SHIFT REQUIREMENTS: Weekend program full time…36 hours/week. Friday: 6:30 am – 5:00 pm. Friday night call 5:00 pm – 7:00 am (Saturday). Call Saturday/Sunday 7a-7a.
General Summary
A Surgical Technologist provides skilled, technical care to patients during surgical procedures. In addition, the Surgical Technologist is expected to participate in a pre-determined on call shift rotation as agreed upon by the employee and the Director of Surgery.
Principle Duties And Responsibilities
- Prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment necessary for each individual surgical procedure.
- Demonstrates good motor coordination required for rapid and accurate movements of the body and hands in response to visual and audio stimuli in the operative field.
- Reviews patient charges from each operative procedure for accuracy.
- Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient rights, as identifies by the Patient Bill of Rights.
- Functions with an awareness and application of safety issues as identified within the department and actively participates in each time out procedure.
- Remains alert during procedures and demonstrates an ability to handle unexpected situations with calm efficiencies; anticipates situations and functions with a proactive awareness; functions appropriately in emergency situations.
- Demonstrates the ability to perform any or all of the surgical technology duties outlined in the Performance Standards, Self-Assessment Orientation Tool.
- Demonstrates an awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for own practice.
- Participates actively in staff development activities for unit.
- Demonstrates self-directed learning and participation of continuing education to meet own development.
- Consults other staff members when in question or unfamiliar with equipment or a procedure; utilizes appropriate staff resources to ensure correctness.
- Demonstrates an awareness of legal responsibilities and the reason for complete accuracy when performing operating room counts (sponge, needle and instrument); knows proper procedure to follow in case of an incorrect count; reports discrepancies and/or corrections immediately.
- Demonstrates effective communication methods and skills, using lines of authority appropriately.
- Uses effective working relationships with all health care team members, patients/SO and hospital staff.
- Remains flexible in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts.
- When requested; is willing to adjust personal schedule in order to complete workload in view of an increased surgical schedule, staffing reduction, early surgical cases, or in preparation for a special inspection; accommodates the OR schedule.
- When participating in an on-call capacity, the Surgical Technologist adheres to unit call requirements (including 30 minute response time), call rotation, and call guidelines to facilitate coverage of OR call during after hours, weekends, and Holidays as needed.
