Certified Surgical Tech Part-time

About the role

Surgical technologists, also called scrubs and surgical or operating‑room technicians, assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. They are members of operating‑room teams that most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program.
• CST certification, or state‑regulated grandfathering without certification.
• Prefer 1–2 years clinical experience in an operating‑room setting; may accept 0–2 years of clinical experience in a related field.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) required.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain medical equipment and instrumentation for surgical procedures.
• Set up the sterile field, including surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions.
• Follow state and federal facility regulations when attending to patients.
• Perform pre‑procedure preparations to the patient’s skin and body.
• Complete a safety check prior to the start of the procedure on appropriate equipment, supplies, etc.
• Assemble both sterile and non‑sterile equipment and verify proper functioning.
• Assist with patient preparation and transport to the procedure room.
• Assist with patient positioning on the procedure table.
• Drape the patient with surgical drapes according to the procedure.
• Pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants.
• Retract, cut sutures, and perform other functions under physician supervision.
• Participate in the count of sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments as required.
• Prepare specimens and assist with their disposition.
• Apply dressings post‑procedure and assist with patient transfer from the procedure bed to the stretcher.
• Clean and restock the procedure room.
• Pull supplies and instruments for upcoming procedures.
• Assist with maintenance of physician preference cards and inventory management.
• Assist with decontamination, cleaning, sterilization, and quality testing related to sterilization and high‑level disinfection.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical and Mental Demands

• Ability to stand for long periods and lift or turn disabled patients.
• Requirement to sit and stand in a normal office environment as needed.
• Ability to concentrate for periods of up to four hours.
• Verbal communication skills in person and on the telephone.
• Proficiency with computer keyboard and monitor use.

• Utilize recognized channels of communication effectively.
• Maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, co‑workers, and other health‑team members.

Environmental and Working Conditions

• Work in clean, well‑lit, well‑ventilated environments.
• Stand for long periods and remain alert during operations.
• Potential exposure to communicable diseases, unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.
• Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required.
