About the role

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a perioperative registered nurse who works in collaboration with the surgical team to provide high-quality patient care during surgical procedures. The RNFA plays a critical role in assisting the surgeon by performing specific tasks that enhance the efficiency and safety of the operation. Accountable for the coordination and provision of professional nursing care appropriate to the age of the patient using the nursing process. Collaborates with other health care professionals and agencies to meet the needs of patients. Provides input into the performance appraisal process for each assigned team member on an ongoing basis. Accountable for input into departmental and patient financial outcomes.

Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited nursing program
  • Current NC RN license or licensure from Nursing Compact State
  • BCLS certification (if not from the American Heart Association, AHA certification required within three months of employment)
  • Successful completion of Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) program that meets the “AORN standards for RN first assistant education programs”
  • Two years operating room experience
  • Departmental competencies

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • BSN
  • Specialty certification in area of practice
  • Certification as a Registered Nurse First Assist (CRNFA)
  • Certification in perioperative nursing (CNOR)
