Responsibilities
- Selects appropriate materials and sterilization packaging for each instrument set, ensuring proper wrapping for aseptic technique.
- Ensures sterility indicators and lot stickers are present on all instrument sets and packages.
- Operates complex sterilization equipment, selecting the correct method of sterilization based on manufacturer instructions.
- Reviews and signs all sterilizer recording charts to verify proper sterilization parameters before releasing items for clinical use.
- Maintains records, documents all requirements in appropriate log books or computer systems, and monitors sterilizer printouts.
- Properly identifies and segregates reusable items for decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization, selecting appropriate cleaning methods based on manufacturer instructions.
- Disassembles and inspects items for damage or missing components, ensuring safe operation of all equipment in the decontamination area.
- Accurately assembles instruments, complex instrument sets, and other surgical items, recording information in the computer tracking system or paper instrument count sheet.
- Utilizes the recall process for sterilization failures and notifies supervisors or managers of positive results.
- Communicates effectively with all hospital departments and within the department, using the chain of command to resolve issues.
- Participates in training new employees, attending in-services and department meetings to maintain knowledge base.
- Rotates assignments among various areas within the department, including decontamination, surgical tray assembly, sterilization processes, and equipment management.
Requirements
- Ability to communicate by reading, writing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively in order to carry out job requirements.
- Ability to understand the needs of the customer and respond to them in a pro-active, courteous, professional, and efficient manner.
- Flexibility and ability to adapt to change.
- Ability to work under stress and deadlines.
- Medical terminology
- Understanding of the principles of microbiology, aseptic principles and techniques, and infection control as they apply to sterile supply operation.
- Basic knowledge of prevention of cross contamination and the critical nature of nosocomial infections.
- Knowledge of the use, operation, maintenance, assembly, disassembly and cleaning requirements of the full range of instruments and equipment.
- Ability and experience with computer systems
Skills
- Required: Certified Registered Central Service Tech (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT)
- Preferred: Basic Life Support - CPR Cert (BLS)

$17.11 - $27.38 per hour
