About the Role

The Senior Medical Assistant Certified (Sr. MA) position functions as an expert and demonstrates highly competent knowledge in advanced examinations and treatments. This role oversees appropriate scope of practice, assists with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatment, and dressing changes, and performs general administrative duties in accordance with CLIA, HIPAA, NCQA, and government standards. The Sr. MA serves as a preceptor and clinical resource to Medical Assistants, training and orienting others as appropriate.

Responsibilities

Service

• Provides care to patients under the direct supervision of a Physician, Registered Nurse, or clinic leadership.
• Completes pre-visit planning, including documenting vital signs, chief complaints, medication reviews, and medical/social history.
• Documents care, diagnostic measurements, treatments, and procedures in the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR).
• Follows up with patients to ensure compliance with recommendations, medications, and test results.
• Coordinates care with hospitals, EDs, consulting physicians, and community resources.
• Role models behaviors to improve patient satisfaction scores.

Quality/Safety

• Reports patient observations, conditions, and problems to the physician and/or nurse.
• Recognizes and reports abnormal clinical findings.
• Performs routine tests such as EKG, rapid strep, urinalysis, and urine pregnancy tests.
• Sterilizes instruments and equipment; maintains exam and treatment rooms, supplies, and equipment.

Finance

• Uses resources efficiently and minimizes waste of supplies.
• Stocks exam rooms, takes inventory, and orders supplies.
• Manages time effectively, prioritizing tasks to minimize incidental overtime.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED, homeschool equivalency, or partial/full completion of post-secondary education).
• Five years of medical assistant experience with highly complex, chronic disease management or in a specialty discipline.

Qualifications

• Certified Medical Assistant through AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, NHA, or Registered Medical Assistant or EMT.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) or Instructor certification (AHA).
• Preferred: Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) through ACA.

Supplemental Requirements

• Work attire: Scrubs or other department-approved clothing.
• May be required to be on-call during emergencies (e.g., disaster, severe weather events).
• May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area.
