About the role

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides direct patient care and complex care coordination to adult patients in both hospital and outpatient settings, focusing on infectious disease conditions. As part of a comprehensive healthcare team, the NP delivers high-quality, efficient care under the supervision of an Infectious Diseases physician.

Responsibilities

  • Perform initial and periodic medical histories, physical examinations, and daily assessments as directed by the physician(s).
  • Provide education to patients, families, and DCH staff on infectious disease conditions and related issues.
  • Perform hospital consultations under physician supervision and direction.
  • Respond to daily telephone requests from consulting physicians, case managers, social workers, clinical staff, and other DCH Health System personnel.
  • Write orders in the medical record for medications based on established written protocols and licensure.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic laboratory and radiology examinations for diagnosis and treatment.
  • Monitor treatment plans established by the supervising physician.
  • Document all patient encounters, observations, interventions, and actions in the patient’s medical record.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of Infectious Disease Program best practices.
  • Engage in Infectious Disease Program Performance Improvement initiatives and assigned hospital quality initiatives.
  • Collaborate with DCH Infection Prevention Specialists to ensure effective program operations.
  • Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards as outlined in performance evaluations.
  • Adhere to DCH Mission, Vision, and Values, fostering positive relationships with patients, families, coworkers, and colleagues.
  • Perform essential job functions safely for patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Identify and reduce unsafe practices to minimize risks and hazards.
  • Use electronic systems, including email, time and attendance software, learning management software, and intranet.
  • Adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Master’s or higher degree in Nursing and graduation from an approved Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Current Certified Alabama Registered Nurse Practitioner Licensure in good standing with the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  • Prior experience as a CRNP in an acute care setting or infectious disease experience recommended.
  • Attainment of DEA/QACSC/LPSP licensure.
  • Ability to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.

Working Conditions

  • Work in a fast-paced acute care setting, requiring travel between hospital units.
  • Physical demands include walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, pushing, and pulling.
  • Must be able to lift and support up to 50 pounds when handling patients and medical equipment.
  • Requires intact senses of sight, hearing, smell, touch, and finger dexterity.
  • Ability to concentrate and respond quickly to changes in patient or clinic conditions.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Access to protected health information (PHI) is limited to job-related needs, with safeguards in place via user ID and password.
  • Physical presence onsite is essential; hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range.
  • Able to perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
