About the Role
The Certified Professional Coder Consultant will review medical records, verify coding accuracy, and provide a summary of findings. You will assist with presenting educational information to clients and staff, serve as a coding resource for billing staff, and maintain excellent communication and customer service to ensure an efficient and productive office.
Responsibilities
- Abstract clinical information from medical records and assign appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes using industry-standard guidelines for various specialties.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding and documentation requirements.
- Share and present CPT and ICD-10 changes with staff.
- Assist staff with coding questions and perform some medical billing duties.
- Conduct coding audits at client offices, including chart audits, billing reviews, and workflow analysis.
- Provide on-site billing education to client providers and staff on documentation and coding guidelines to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Deliver measurable, actionable solutions to improve documentation and coding accuracy.
- Generate leads for consulting services and perform internal audits for the compliance team.
- Travel within the state to client locations and testify in litigation related to audits.
- Assist clients courteously and expediently while meeting or exceeding annual performance goals.
- Increase proficiency in company technology, paperless systems, tools, and processes.
Requirements
- Associate’s Degree in Business Administration or equivalent; or a combination of education and work experience that enables performance of all position aspects.
- AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
- Ability to code conditions and procedures using ICD-10-CM and CPT.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy.
- Understanding of HMO/PPO, Medicare, Medicaid, and other payer requirements and systems.
- Proficiency with computer systems, software, and 10-key calculator.
- Effective communication skills for resolving issues with insurance payers and interacting with patients regarding claims.
- Customer service skills for diverse age groups and backgrounds.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Problem-solving skills to research and resolve discrepancies, denials, appeals, and collections.
- Knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping procedures.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Proven relationship-building skills with clinical and non-clinical personnel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA) certification.
