The Job

The County of San Bernardino is recruiting for a Director of Public Works to plan, organize and administer the activities of the Department including the specific functions of Transportation (the operation and maintenance of a 2,830 mile road system), the County’s Flood Control District, the Office of County Surveyor, and Solid Waste Management (the operation of landfills and transfer stations, and miscellaneous solid waste programs). The position serves as “Director of Transportation” and “Flood Control Engineer.”

Essential Functions

  • Direct the planning, administration, and coordination of the functions and programs of Public Works
  • Administer the annual budget; recommend and develop policies and procedures
  • Confer with federal, state, and local officials on public works matters
  • Represent the Department at meetings, conferences, and hearings at all levels of government to explain, interpret, and promote department programs
  • Cookordinate the activities of the department with other agencies, departments, and organizations
  • Direct the preparation of data, reports, agreements, and other legal documents for submission to the Board of Supervisors

Minimum Requirements

  • Candidates will have at least five years of highly responsible experience in the administration of professional civil engineering activities, preferably in a county, state or municipal setting, and must be a registered civil engineer in the State of California.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated leadership skills, in-depth knowledge of government programs at the federal, state and local levels, and possess the ability to manage complex organizations.

Desired Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s or advanced degree in civil engineering or any field related to the position’s essential functions is helpful but not required.
