Responsibilities
- Performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for laboratory analysis under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Supervisor.
- Performs computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties.
- Possesses adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology.
- Demonstrates good communication skills and telephone etiquette when greeting patients and visitors.
- Demonstrates proper phlebotomy technique and equipment use for collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients.
- Processes specimens for microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank.
- Processes specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
- Stocks and orders routine supplies.
- Maintains cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
- Processes or loads specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation according to established policies and procedures.
- May assist with picking up samples at the hospital/OR, sorting samples for analysis, assisting pathology, inventory, replenishing supplies, ordering supplies, mail pickup/delivery, faxing, answering phones, and product deliveries.
- May work across multiple departments or night/graveyard shifts.
- May be delegated as a Phlebotomy Lead.
- Performs other tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the department manager or director.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with documented competency required.
- Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician required.
- BLS certification within forty-five days of hire and maintained current, according to hospital requirements.
- Minimum of one year of clinical laboratory experience preferred.
Pay
A reasonable compensation estimate for this role is $17.33 to $25.09 per hour. The exact starting compensation will be determined based on factors such as skillset, experience, education, credentials, and licensure.
