About the Role
The Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) performs timely and accurate blood draws for inpatients, emergency department patients, and outpatients. They are responsible for specimen processing, accessioning, phlebotomy, heel and finger sticks, customer service, clerical duties, problem resolution, record keeping, supply inventory and maintenance, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform timely and accurate blood draws for inpatients, emergency department patients, and outpatients.
- Process, accession, and handle specimens, including heel and finger sticks.
- Provide customer service, manage clerical duties, and resolve problems.
- Maintain records, manage supply inventory, and ensure a clean and safe work environment.
- Communicate effectively with laboratory customers, operate instruments, and perform preventive maintenance.
- Adhere to laboratory safety standards, hospital isolation, and infection control protocols.
Requirements
- Certified Phlebotomist with a valid California Phlebotomy license (CPT).
- Minimum one (1) year of phlebotomy lab experience, preferably in a large, complex healthcare system.
- Knowledge of medical and scientific terminology.
- Understanding of laboratory regulations, safety standards, and ethical requirements.
- Competency in specimen collection, preparation, storage, and disposal procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, staff, and healthcare providers.
- Capability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment with strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and providing excellent customer service.
Qualifications
- UCSD BART certification or BLS at time of hire, with commitment to obtain BART within six months.
- Emergency Department (ED) experience.
- Accessioning and specimen processing experience.
- Recent CPT experience.
Special Conditions
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check and a pre-employment physical.
- Must work variable shifts, weekend rotations, holidays, and swing shifts.
- May be required to travel to other UCSD sites.
Pay Scale: $29.66 - $36.88 / Hour
Worksite: East Campus Medical Center (Alvarado Road)
