About the Role

The Certified Pharmacy Technician will prepare, compound, dispense medications, and perform other technical duties in the pharmacy department under direct supervision of a Pharmacist. Must demonstrate competency through supervised observation and/or any other necessary annual required competencies. Must be proficient in all responsibilities and duties of a certified pharmacy technician.

Responsibilities

  • Medication Distribution
    • Single Dispense: Prepare medications and/or IV for dispensing, select correct medication, strength, and form. Fill, label, and initial medication bag for pharmacist verification.
    • Bulk Dispense: Fill multiple patient-specific medications in accordance with department procedure.
    • Transportation: Securely deliver bulk fill, first dose, and missing doses to appropriate units while ensuring patient confidentiality.
    • Missing Doses: Generate label, fill, and have checked by a pharmacist, then dispense to the appropriate floor or unit.
    • Product Preparation: Prepare, measure, and count medications, including compounding ointments, creams, oral solutions, oral solids, IVs, etc.
    • Automatic Dispensing Cabinet (ADC) User:
      • Accurately add new users to the ADC system.
      • Properly load ADC with correct medications after pharmacist verification.
      • Monitor par levels and adjust as needed.
      • Generate reports to fill, track, and identify/report discrepancies.
      • Troubleshoot minor problems with ADC.
      • Accurately restock medications, fluids, and stock outs.
      • Assist in retrieving recalled medications.
    • Controlled Substances: Follow all policies, procedures, and applicable laws regarding controlled substance medications.
  • IV Admixture
    • Aseptic Technique: Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic technique, including proper hand washing and use of IV room attire. Understand Joint Commission, hospital, and departmental policies and procedures. Complete aseptic technique competency to comply with USP standards.
    • Small Volume: Prepare small volume admixtures.
    • Specialty Solutions: Prepare epidural, intrathecal, intravenous, intramuscular, sterile syringes, and chemotherapy (when applicable).
    • Syringes: Prepare neonatal syringes (when applicable).
    • Large Volume: Prepare large volume solutions.
    • Room Cleaning: Maintain clean room environment according to policies and procedures.
  • Safety and Compliance
    • Follow all safety and compliance standards for compounding medications.
    • Ensure all requirements and procedures of the United States Pharmacopeia are met.
  • Miscellaneous Activities
    • Repackage and bar-code medications according to Georgia Board of Pharmacy Rules and Regulations.
    • Provide customer service to customers and other healthcare professionals in-person or virtually.
    • Process charges: late charges, supplemental, OR charges, nuclear, and exception reports.
    • Order supplies and obtain purchase orders using the appropriate ordering system.
    • Ensure distribution and accountability of controlled substance medications.
    • Restock code carts and other kits according to departmental procedure and complete required inspections.
    • Perform monthly unit and pharmacy inspections, including temperature and humidity monitoring.
    • Track out-of-date medications in various facility locations.
    • Train and mentor pharmacy technicians under the lead pharmacy technician.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    • Comply with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician (PHT) certification in good standing with the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPHT) or Pharmacist-Intern (PHARMINT) license.
  • Hospital pharmacy experience (preferred).
