Certified Pharmacy Technician

About the role

Under direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, assists in the practice of pharmacy in accordance with state and federal regulations. Responsible for using pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions. If PTCB certified, assists with and coaches pharmacy technicians in system operations and cashiers in register operations.

• Model and share customer service best practices with team members, including interpersonal habits (greeting, eye contact, courtesy) and service traits (offering help proactively, identifying needs, servicing until satisfied)
• Develop strong relationships with most valuable customers

Operations

• Assist in the practice of pharmacy under pharmacist supervision in accordance with state, federal, and company policy
• Review and comply with the Walgreen Co. Pharmacy Code of Conduct
• Perform duties as assigned by Pharmacy Manager, Staff Pharmacist, and Store Manager, including:
  • Utilizing pharmacy systems to enter patient and drug information accurately
  • Filling prescriptions by retrieving, counting, and pouring pharmaceutical drugs
  • Verifying medicine is correct and checking for possible interactions
• Assist pharmacists in scheduling and maintaining workflow
• Report prescription errors immediately to the pharmacist on duty and adhere to policies regarding pharmacy errors and the Quality Improvement Program
• Strictly adhere to Good Faith Dispensing policy during all applicable prescription dispensing activities
• Register all related sales on assigned cash register, collect and handle cash as required
• Take customers to OTC aisle when possible to assist in locating products
• Handle telephone calls that do not require personal attention of the pharmacist, including those to physicians
• Process (correct and resubmit) manual claims for third party program prescription services in a timely and efficient manner
• Perform other clerical duties as assigned by the Pharmacy Manager
• Assist with inventory management activities: ordering, unpacking, checking, and storing shipments of pharmaceuticals
• Maintain knowledge of asset protection techniques and file claims for warehouse overages, shortages, order errors, or damaged goods involving Rx drugs
• May assist pharmacist in administering clinical services including collection and proper labeling of blood/urine samples from patients and other clinical services as required
• Assist pharmacy staff in coordination of clinical services, Walgreens healthcare clinics, and external providers
• Assist Pharmacy Manager and Staff Pharmacist in developing and maintaining relationships with the local medical community through provider detailing and outreach to health groups, retirement homes, nursing homes, and other forums
• Assist with exterior and interior maintenance: ensure Pharmacy Department is stocked with adequate supplies, clean, neat, and orderly
• Comply with all company policies and procedures; maintain respectful relationships with coworkers
• Complete special assignments and other tasks as assigned

Training & Personal Development

• Earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or state required certification/registration
• Otherwise, earn PTCB certification as condition of promotion to senior technician
• Attend training and complete PPLs requested by Manager; acquire continuing education credits
• Maintain knowledge and skill in healthcare and pharmacy, including latest news and developments

Qualifications

• Must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English (except in Puerto Rico)
• Requires willingness to work flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours

Preferred Qualifications

• Six months of experience in a retail environment
• Prior work experience with Walgreens
• Good math skills for filling prescriptions accurately (counting, measuring, weighing medications)
• Good computer skills
• Knowledge of store inventory control
• PTCB certification

Pay

Salary Range: $18 - $21.50 / Hourly
