Certified Peer Support Specialist-Peer Living Room
About the role
Certified Peer Support Specialists provide highly individualized services in our Peer Living Room, promoting individual self-determination and decision-making to individuals with mental health and/or substance use challenges. CPSS also provides essential expertise and consultation to the team to promote a culture in which each individual’s point of view and preferences are recognized, understood, respected, and integrated into treatment, rehabilitation, and community self-help activities. This position may serve as an advocate for the person supported and performs a wide range of tasks to assist individuals in regaining control over their own recovery process. These interventions are strength-based and focused on promoting recovery, symptom reduction, increased coping skills, and achievement of the highest level of functioning in the community. CPSS functions as a role model of competency in recovery and ongoing coping skills.
Responsibilities
- Meet with clients to provide support in accordance with the individual's recovery goals
- Facilitate peer support groups, meetings, and workshops
- Support and assist individuals in decision making and resolution of minor problems
- Connect individuals with resources, advise on processes, and encourage follow-through with proposed resolutions
- Locate social activities or provide other assistance as needed
- Foster clients’ development of healthy relationships by encouraging participation in community activities
- Observe behavior and evidence of general well-being and discuss observations with the individual
- Model effective coping and self-help techniques to individuals or groups
- Provide support and problem-solving conversation with individuals on empowerment skills and successful community living
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED or equivalent
- Certified as a NC Peer Support Specialist
- Must complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of training specific to the required components of the specific service definition, including crisis response within the first 90 days of employment
- Valid driver’s license and automotive insurance
- Ability to pass background check and drug screen
- CPR, first aid, NCI, and/or role-related certification (a plus)
Pre-employment screening includes: criminal background check, registry checks (OIG exclusions database, Child Abuse Registry, and Offenders Against Individuals with Developmental Disabilities), drug testing, education verification, and credentialing based on position requirements. Proof of employment history or references may be required. Positions requiring driving also require proof of driver’s license, insurance, and vehicle.
Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM (no weekend or on-call hours). Occasional events may require attendance outside normal hours.
