Banner Desert Medical Center is seeking a Certified Patient Care Assistant to join our 32-bed Medical Surgery Oncology Unit in Mesa, Arizona.

About the Role

This position provides routine patient care to promote patient comfort and contribute to the overall patient plan of care. Responsibilities include on-going patient data collection, documentation in medical records, and supporting the efficient operation of the nursing unit/department.

The unit specializes in cancer treatments for diagnoses including leukemia, lymphoma, sarcoma, myeloma, breast, prostate, and others. It operates with a 1:4-5 nurse-to-patient ratio and emphasizes strong teamwork, leadership, and excellent patient care.

Full-time day shift positions are available, working from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM, with required weekend rotations. Enjoy a flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential and an 18% night shift differential when applicable.

Banner Desert Medical Center is a Level 1 Trauma designated facility with over 700 licensed beds, including over 100 dedicated to children and 76 to the NICU. The hospital is recognized for excellence in high-risk pregnancy, neonatal care, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, cardiology, oncology, and emergency medicine. It features 33 operating rooms, advanced technology like the da Vinci Surgical System, and a top-ranked Emergency Department.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene, mobility, and nutritional intake.
  • Collect patient specimens and data, such as vital signs, input/output, and other delegated measurements; document objective data and routine aspects of patient care.
  • Assist in transporting patient specimens and recognize/report abnormalities or changes in patient health status to licensed professionals.
  • Promote continuity of care by accurately communicating patient status to other caregivers.
  • Perform procedures and use equipment as delegated by a licensed professional, including blood draws, Foley catheter removal, EKGs, and EKG monitoring.
  • Provide supplies, support, and assistance for unit-specific procedures under direct supervision.
  • Perform receptionist/clerical duties to support unit efficiency and communication flow.
  • Participate in resolving customer problems or escalate issues to the appropriate person.
  • Maintain complete patient records, including admission, transfer, discharge information, progress notes, and consent forms; ensure all documents are scanned or filed appropriately.
  • Label and ensure accessibility of charting forms; maintain adequate supplies of patient education materials.
  • Assist in ordering patient specimens and transcribe/process physician orders using the electronic medical record.
  • Maintain adequate levels of office, dietary, and medical supplies; complete requisition forms and reconcile supply orders upon delivery.
  • Monitor and track electronic equipment (e.g., patient ID scanners, laptops) to ensure accountability and functionality.
  • Transport patients, including pre-operative and immediate post-operative patients to critical care units, and participate in OR room turnover.

This role operates under supervision in a fast-paced, customer-service-focused environment, interacting with staff, patients, families, and physicians at all levels.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the state of practice (required for new hires and transfers; existing Tucson incumbents may not transfer without meeting this requirement).
  • Skills and abilities typically attained with 1 year of medical clerical experience, preferably in a hospital or physician office setting, or prior customer service experience.
  • Excellent organizational, human relations, and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy/keyboarding skills.
  • For certain department assignments: Minimum passing score of 85% on ECG or EEG test with accurate identification of lethal cardiac dysrhythmias and epileptiform activity; successful completion of a unit-approved basic electrocardiogram or electroencephalographic interpretation course, or on-the-job training.
  • For employees at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, or BUMG/BUMCT/BUMCS in a Behavioral Health clinical setting serving children: Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card required at hire and maintained throughout employment; must sign an Arizona Criminal History Affidavit upon hire.
  • For employees at Banner Home Care AZ: Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card required at hire and maintained throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) licensure in Arizona.
  • Recent healthcare experience.
  • Successful completion of an approved unit secretary program.

Physical Demands

  • Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.
  • Possess physical agility and adequate reaction time to respond quickly to unexpected patient care needs.
  • Adequate hearing and visual acuity, including color vision.
  • Fine motor skills, adequate eye-hand coordination, and ability to grasp and handle objects.
  • Able to use proper body mechanics to assist patients in ambulating, transferring in/out of bed, chair, or wheelchair.
  • May be required to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Must use standard precautions due to threat of exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on the telephone.
  • Periodic use of a personal computer.
