About the role

As an Adult Acute Care Patient Care Assistant in the General Surgery unit, you will provide care for an adult patient population consisting of colo/rectal, urology, plastics, gynecological, and abdominal cases. The unit also cares for overflow medical patients with conditions such as simple pneumonias, diabetes, renal disease, GI issues, and skin disorders. This fast-paced unit encourages patient collaboration in managing their care, including ambulating three times a day and sitting in a chair for meals (if applicable).

This is a full-time, night-shift position working from 6:00 PM to 6:30 AM. Weekend and holiday rotations are required. You will receive a flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential and an 18% night shift differential when applicable.

Banner Children’s Hospital at Desert, within the same campus, is a state-of-the-art, 200+ bed facility providing high-quality, child-friendly, family-centered care. It includes a 76-bed NICU, a 24-bed PICU, six pediatric ORs, a 22-bed ED, and dedicated pediatric rehab, radiology, oncology, and hematology capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Provides assistance in activities of daily living, including basic hygiene, mobility, and nutritional intake to promote patient health.
• Collects patient specimens and data, such as vital signs, input/output, and other delegated measurements, documenting routine aspects of patient care.
• Assists in the transportation of patient specimens and recognizes/reports abnormalities or changes in patient health status to licensed professionals.
• Promotes continuity of care by accurately communicating patient status to other caregivers.
• Performs procedures and uses equipment as delegated by a licensed professional, including blood draws, foley catheter removal, EKGs, and EKG monitoring.
• Provides supplies, support, and assistance for unit-specific procedures under direct supervision.
• Performs receptionist/clerical duties to support operational efficiency and effective communication within the department.
• Participates in resolving customer problems or escalates issues to the appropriate person for resolution.
• Maintains complete patient records, including admission, transfer, discharge information, progress notes, and consent forms.
• Ensures all reports and chart forms are scanned or filed into patient records and maintains accessibility of necessary forms.
• Maintains adequate supplies of patient education materials, office, dietary, and medical supplies, completing requisition forms as needed.
• Reconciles supply orders upon delivery and monitors/tracks electronic equipment such as patient ID scanners and laptops.
• May assist with transporting patients, including pre-operative and immediate post-operative patients to critical care units, and participates in OR room turnover.

This position works under supervision in a fast-paced, customer-service-focused environment, interacting with staff, patients, families, and physicians.

Requirements

• High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
• Current BLS certification.
• Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the state of practice is required for new hires and transfers (existing Tucson incumbents may not transfer without meeting this requirement).
• Skills and abilities typically attained with 1 year of medical clerical experience, preferably in a hospital or physician office setting, or prior customer service experience.
• Excellent organizational, human relations, and communication skills.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy/keyboarding skills.
• Depending on department assignment, must receive a minimum passing score of 85% on ECG or EEG test with accurate identification of lethal cardiac dysrhythmias and epileptiform activity.
• Successful completion of a unit-approved basic electrocardiogram interpretation course, electroencephalographic interpretation course, or on-the-job training.

Preferred Qualifications

• Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) licensure in Arizona.
• Recent healthcare experience.
• Successful completion of an approved unit secretary program.

Additional Requirements

• Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, and BUMG, BUMCT, or BUMCS in a Behavioral Health clinical setting serving children must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain it for the duration of employment. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.
