About the Role

To assist the medical provider with physical examinations, carry out nursing treatments, and perform other health care procedures according to provider's orders. Must develop working knowledge of clinic policies and procedures. Responsibilities

• Provide a standard of excellence in customer service for patients and other customers.
• Maintain timely flow of patients and patient privacy according to HIPAA requirements.
• Prepare patients for examination by the Provider and assist patients in walking, standing, or sitting if needed.
• Prepare equipment/supplies to assist the medical provider in the treatment and testing of patients.
• Perform or assist with procedures including, but not limited to, EKGs, Holter monitors, stress tests, PFT, dABI, WWE, wound care, flu/strep/HCG testing, glucose check/teaching, fit cards, unna boots, ear lavage, coaguchek, nebulizer, and phlebotomy.
• Take and record height, weight, temperature, respiration, blood pressure/pulse rate (manual/LXI or Connex machine), and review medications.
• Prepare, organize, sterilize rooms, tools/equipment, and set up medical equipment. Sterilize instruments, properly dispose of contaminated materials, and prepare patient examination rooms to ensure they stay clean, neat, and properly stocked.
• Update patients' care plans under the direction of the medical provider.
• Order, prepare, and inspect patients’ charts.
• Assist scheduling with specialists, procedures, and diagnostic imaging (DI) testing outside of HTMG.
• Document tests and examination results according to HealthTexas, HIPAA, and compliance policies and procedures.
• Review patient testing and examination results with the medical provider; document instructions according to HealthTexas, HIPAA, and compliance policies and procedures.
• Input and monitor EMR records of patients during the exam process.
• Administer medications, injections, and immunizations as ordered by the provider, including inputting in EMR and scanning of consents.
• Maintain inventory of medications and supplies needed by the clinic.
• Provide CPR if needed.
• Perform administrative duties such as taking, receiving, and relaying messages between providers, patients, and pharmacies; filling out necessary documents for patient care; scanning documents into patients' charts in ECW; refilling maintenance medications allowed by HealthTexas Medical Group; and assisting patients with filling out Advance Directives.
• Follow all HealthTexas Medical Group policies and procedures, including human resources, clinic, administrative, HIPAA, and compliance.
• Utilize OSHA and HIPAA regulations, universal precautions to protect self and patients.
• Perform lab quality controls and update control logs.
• Follow PPE guidelines.
• Bilingual Associates may be expected to utilize their language skills to translate or interpret for patients, family members, or colleagues.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• One year of prior experience working as a Medical Assistant in a clinical environment or successful completion of an externship within a HealthTexas clinic.
• High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
• Successful completion of a recognized Medical Assistant Certification program preferred.
• CPR certification is required.
• Phlebotomy and/or Venipuncture certificate may be required.

Skills

• Skilled in the use of a computer, fax machine, and copier.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel.
• Demonstrates knowledge of basic medical terminology.
• Ability to work in a multi-tasking environment and under stressful conditions where constructive criticism from others is encouraged.
• Ability to work well with clinical staff and provide quality patient care consistently.
• Able to communicate effectively and respectfully with all individuals regardless of sexual, racial, ethnic, or economic status.
• Demonstrates knowledge of EMR skills and can prioritize tasks and organize workflow.

Schedule

Clinic hours vary at each location; Associates rotate 8-hour shifts as assigned to meet business needs and/or the needs of patients. Requires travel to other sites as requested for training, to meet business needs, and/or the needs of patients.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

• Medical office/clinic environment with exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
• Regularly required to talk and hear.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position and meet attendance requirements.
• Must be able to assist patients in the event of an emergency without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of others.
• Requires manual dexterity, sitting, standing (no less than 2 hours at a time), stooping, reaching, kneeling, crouching, bending, walking, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
• May assist in lifting patients.
