Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
About the role
The Certified Nursing Assistant cares for residents under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse or a licensed practical/vocational nurse. This role assists residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), ensures a safe and comfortable environment, and supports licensed nursing staff in delivering individualized care in accordance with regulatory requirements and facility policies.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct resident care, including assistance with bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, incontinent care as applicable, oral hygiene and feeding
- Measure and record vital signs, weight, percentage of meal consumed intake/output as directed
- Assist residents with mobility, transfers, and position using proper body mechanics and lift equipment as applicable
- Respond promptly to call lights, resident needs, and changes in condition; report observations to licensed nursing staff
- Support residents' independence and dignity, while ensuring safety and comfort
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation and in accordance with facility procedures
- Follow infection control, safety, and universal precaution guidelines at all times
- Provide emotional support and companionship to residents, fostering a positive living environment
- Maintains a clean, safe and comfortable environment
- Provides postmortem care
- Make routine rounds on each assigned resident every two hours
- Provides skin care and observes residents' skin when giving care and reports changes to licensed nurse
- Modifies own behavior in response to residents' behaviors
- Is aware of developmental tasks associated with the aging process
- Contributes to the residents' assessment (MDS/CAA's) and the plan of care
- Provides nursing rehabilitation/restorative nursing services
- Promote residents' ability to adapt and adjust to living as independently as possible
- Assists the resident in self-care according to the resident's abilities
- Assists the residents in the use of assistive devices for transferring, walking and mobility, dressing and grooming, eating and swallowing
- Maintains range of motion, proper turning and positioning in bed and chair
- Assists with bowel and bladder retraining
- Instructs the resident on the care and use of prosthetic and orthotic devices
- Incorporates training and skill practice activities, which include repetition, physical or verbal cueing, and task segmentation
- Cares for residents with Dementia
- Knows how to respond to residents' behaviors
- Allows residents to make personal choices
- Provides and reinforces other behavior consistent with residents' dignity
- Uses the resident's families as a source of emotional support for the resident
- Demonstrates a basic understanding of behavior and functional symptoms associated with dementia by providing interventions and treatments to help reduce these symptoms
- Uses modification in the presentation of activities of daily living to maintain and maximize resident functions
- Uses effective intervention techniques to address behavioral concerns
- Assists with transporting residents to activities
- Demonstrates effective communication techniques for residents with dementia
- Provides non-resident care including but not limited to: Wash wheelchairs, cleaning soiled utility areas, cleaning shower and whirlpool rooms, cleaning kitchen areas on the nursing unit
- Performs other duties assigned
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience: High School Graduate/GED
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant in good standing with the certification board or is a graduate of a state approved nursing assistant training program and passed a state approved competency examination (written and skills) within 120 days of employment; name entered into state nurse aide registry.
Minimum Qualifications: Computer skills are required. Meets all state and federal criminal background check requirements.
