Certified Nurse Assistant Stepdown Unit

We are seeking a dependable and compassionate Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to support patient care on our medical-surgical stepdown unit. The CNA will assist nursing staff in providing quality, patient-centered care by performing essential clinical and supportive tasks.

About the Role

This position requires strong communication skills, attention to safety, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced hospital environment. You will work night shifts (36 scheduled weekly hours) and may be exposed to infectious diseases, unpleasant elements, and emergency situations. Occasional exposure to radiation may occur.

Responsibilities

  • Recognize, obtain, and report appropriate patient data to staff.
  • Provide patient care services including basic hygiene, bathing, and feeding.
  • Obtain and document vital signs accurately.
  • Communicate relevant information to nursing staff as required.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to patient comfort and privacy while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Handle minimal-risk medications in kits, trays, or packs, as well as IV fluids in patient care areas.
  • Follow MUSC Standards of Behaviors and perform other assigned duties.
  • Practice financial stewardship of supplies and resources.

Work Environment

  • Exposure to infectious, contagious, and blood-borne diseases.
  • Contact with patients under varied circumstances, including accidents, injuries, and illnesses.
  • Subject to unpredictable situations and emergency or crisis scenarios.
  • Occasional irregular hours and exposure to radiation.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for up to twelve (12) hours.
  • Use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, talk, hear, and smell.
  • Lift or exert energy up to 35 pounds; safe patient handling equipment is provided for transfers exceeding this limit.
  • Close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception required.

Mental Requirements

  • Ability to read, interpret, and write reports, manuals, or procedures.
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from patients, families, and staff.
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Multitask and prioritize responsibilities to complete tasks efficiently.

Population Served

This role primarily interacts with patients of all age groups, providing direct care. Staff must demonstrate the ability to meet the physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related needs of diverse patient populations and respond to cultural expectations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current South Carolina Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certification or Patient Care Technician certificate.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.
