Responsibilities

  • Administer oral and topical medications to residents as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, and in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations
  • Perform routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, comfort and wellbeing of the residents
  • Demonstrate knowledge of "five rights" of medication administration
  • Administer and record all medication given to residents based upon their specific chart
  • Take and record vital signs of residents as assigned or as may be required by certain medications
  • Record the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately, utilizing the computer system to enter and reference resident information as needed
  • Observe and report any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse immediately
  • Administer PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy
  • Ensure antiseptic techniques and good hand washing practices for infection control, as well as utilizing universal precautions are in place and practiced
  • Report and when appropriate, record any changes observed in condition or behavior of residents and unusual incidents
  • Submit incident/accident reports to supervisor or Administrator within twenty-four (24) hours after their occurrence
  • Communicate with medical staff, nursing service and other department supervisors
  • Supervise care staff in absence of nurses
  • Maintain, clean and organize the Medication Room
  • Maintain a liaison with other department supervisors to adequately plan for resident activities
  • Attend all required training, in-service and staff meetings
  • May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals
  • May be subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc, including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses
  • Maintain resident confidentiality, staff confidentiality; treat staff and residents with kindness, dignity and respect
  • Comply with Resident's Rights rules

Requirements

  • A High School Diploma or General Education Degree; or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Certified Medication Aide certification required
