Certified Medical Assistant: Podiatry

Position Summary

The Certified Medical Assistant supports the delivery of patient care in an outpatient setting by performing clinical, administrative, and technical tasks under the supervision of a licensed provider. This role requires initiative, teamwork, and effective communication with healthcare providers, clinical staff, and coworkers.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Aid providers with direct patient care, including vital signs, patient histories, and clinical procedures.
• Administer medications as ordered by a physician or mid-level provider.
• Perform venipuncture, EKGs, IV starts (as allowed under supervision), and other diagnostic procedures.
• Document care accurately in the electronic health record (EHR) and maintain organized patient records.
• Provide patient education, discharge instructions, and assist with coordination of referrals and follow-up care.
• Maintain medical equipment, ensure exam rooms are properly stocked, and report safety or equipment issues.
• Support quality improvement and customer service initiatives.
• Communicate professionally with patients, staff, and external contacts.
• Promote the principles of healthcare integration and the Patient-Centered Medical Home.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of clinical procedures, medical terminology, and patient care practices in an outpatient setting.
• Knowledge of infection prevention and control, OSHA standards, and safe clinical practices.
• Knowledge of HIPAA, patient confidentiality requirements, and healthcare compliance standards.
• Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, documentation requirements, and clinical workflows.
• Knowledge of medication administration principles, vaccine protocols, and basic pharmacology.
• Understanding of patient flow processes, care coordination, and customer service principles.
• Knowledge of quality improvement practices and Patient-Centered Medical Home concepts.

Education

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program required; certification through AAMA, AMT, or NCCT preferred.
• Current CPR/BLS certification preferred.
• Additional training in phlebotomy, EKGs, pharmacology, and diagnostic testing preferred.

Experience

• Minimum of one (1) year of experience in an outpatient, primary care, or ambulatory care setting preferred.
• Experience performing clinical skills such as vital signs, phlebotomy, EKGs, injections, medication administration, and specimen collection preferred.
• Experience using electronic health record systems and standard office software is strongly preferred.
• Experience working with diverse patient populations and collaborating within a multidisciplinary care team preferred.

Physical Demands

• Must be able to perform essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and manual dexterity required for patient care and equipment use.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 30 pounds and assist with patient positioning or mobility as needed.
• Requires visual acuity for reading records, administering medications, and performing clinical tasks.
• Requires auditory ability to communicate effectively with patients, providers, and staff.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
• Work is performed in a primary care outpatient clinical setting. May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, and communicable diseases. May encounter patients who are physically or emotionally distressed.
• Requires flexibility with occasional extended hours or travel between clinic sites.
