Purpose of Position

Performs various duties to enhance the patient care process in the Oncology Department in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Navigates the patient flow for providers.
  • Prepares the patient record with relevant data prior to the clinic visit.
  • Aids members of the Medical/Radiation Oncology Team in maintaining departmental throughput by placing patients in exam rooms, assisting with exams and procedures, transporting patients, and maintaining supplies and equipment.
  • Advocates for patients as appropriate and assists in resolving their concerns.
  • Aids in the turnover of rooms as directed.
  • Assists in starting procedures (obtaining vital signs, height and weight, entering patient data into the computer; obtaining and transferring of blood to the oncology unit), transferring patients, and supporting patients with activities of daily living.
  • Aids physicians and nurses with procedures as requested.
  • Communicates with nurses, Radiation Therapists, and Providers to effectively facilitate patient flow.
  • Advises patients on preparation required for exam or additional testing specific to the department and keeps patients informed of visit status, unforeseen delays, and other relevant information.
  • Draws blood and transports specimens to the Laboratory.
  • Introduces self and positively identifies the patient prior to blood collection.
  • Instructs patients on proper blood collection procedures.
  • Ensures that all applicable required lab forms are obtained at the time of service.
  • Researches unusual test requests using available resources, including but not limited to the blood collection manual.
  • Maintains accurate/timely documentation in hospital information systems.
  • Maintains exam rooms and treatment areas prepared and/or maintained.
  • Cleans and/or maintains supplies and equipment.
  • Orders, restocks, and maintains clinic supplies and equipment as assigned or directed, checks expiration dates.
  • Maintains refrigerator temperature logs, needle boxes, etc.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate inventories of supplies through accurate reporting of shortages, damaged or defective equipment to department Supervisor.
  • Provides clerical/office support as needed.
  • Aids in the orientation of other personnel to the unit under the direction of management.
  • Maintains testing areas and other work areas in a clean, sanitary condition for the safety of patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, in-services, trade journals, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest trends in the field of expertise.
  • Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications

  • Certified Medical Assistant, Oncology – Grade S8, Job Code 8223
  • High School Diploma, GED or degree
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English
  • (BLS) - Current Basic Life Support certification and must maintain certification
  • Meets at least one of the following qualifications:
    • Nationally Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)
    • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
    • Successful completion of basic Phlebotomy training program
  • Certified Medical Assistant II, Oncology – Grade S8A, Job Code 8293
  • High School Diploma, GED or degree
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English
  • (BLS) - Current Basic Life Support certification and must maintain certification
  • Meets at least one of the following qualifications:
    • Nationally Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)
    • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
    • Successful passage of CCHC Nursing Assistant Competency Exam (PBT)
    • Nationally Certified Phlebotomy Technician with NHA or ASCP National certification and must maintain certification

Schedule Details

32 / 40 FLEX Hours Per Week, Rotating Shifts 7:30a-3:30p, 8:00a-4:00p, 8:30a-4:30p or 9:00a-5:00p, Occasional Weekends and Holidays
