Responsibilities
- Engages in population-appropriate communication, including knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
- Provides clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment and involves family/guardian in assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care.
- Identifies physical limitations of patients and deploys interventions when necessary.
- Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
- Interprets population-related data and plans care appropriately, including responding to unique psychological, religious, or cultural needs.
- Performs treatments, administers medication, or operates equipment safely.
- Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
- Assists in implementing age-appropriate care for specific patient populations, including direct patient care as part of the clinical team.
- Obtains vital signs, EKGs, laboratory specimens, and other necessary information for patient evaluation while adhering to universal precautions.
- Assists providers in documenting notes, orders, and prescriptions in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Prepares and maintains the clinic area, including cleaning and stocking examination rooms, setting up and securing computer equipment, and maintaining diagnostic equipment.
- Returns routine patient telephone calls (e.g., prescription refills, pre-certification) with appropriate and timely documentation.
- Coordinates ancillary services such as diagnostic testing/imaging, hospital procedures/admissions, additional patient visits, and acquisition of medical records.
- Maintains a positive, professional, and cooperative demeanor in all interactions with patients, staff, physicians, and management.
- Ensures a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards, procedures, and legal regulations.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and adheres to legal responsibilities and requirements of the medical assistant role.
- Seeks knowledge and understanding of quality measures and patient experience.
Administrative Duties
- Using computer applications.
- Answering telephones.
- Greeting patients.
- Updating and filing patient medical records.
- Coding and filling out insurance forms.
- Scheduling appointments.
- Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services.
- Handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma, graduate of a medical assistant program (minimum required).
- License and Certification: Certified or Registered Medical Assistant from AAMA, NHA, NCCT, NAHP, ARMA, or AMT.
- Years of Experience: Seven to eleven months of equivalent experience preferred.
