About the Role
Geisinger offers outpatient Certified Medical Assistants a $3,000 bonus for eligible candidates. With hundreds of community sites, Certified Medical Assistants work to the top of their certification while providing top-notch care in an ambulatory setting.
Responsibilities
- Provides direct patient care and clinical support for physicians and other providers in the outpatient setting.
- Performs clinical duties such as preparing patients, collecting and reviewing pertinent information, performing technical duties, documenting using the electronic medical record, and supporting a safe environment for patients.
- Provides administrative and clerical support for the clinic/department including patient scheduling, filing reports, and following up on documentation, phone calls, and billing inquiries.
- Obtains and documents patient’s reason for visit, weight, vital signs, visit screening information, medication review, and pertinent information for provider using the rooming tool in the electronic medical record.
- Sets up examination and treatment rooms between cases.
- Assists patients as needed to prepare for visits with providers, ensuring patient safety and privacy.
- Provides direct patient care as directed by provider, including performing EKGs, wound dressings, and supporting minor surgical procedures and ancillary examinations.
- Prepares and administers medications according to policy and procedure after validation of knowledge and demonstration of competency (intravenous medications excluded).
- Completes patient tests and treatments per provider’s order according to policy and procedure after validation of knowledge and competency.
- Collects and prepares laboratory specimens, completes associated paperwork accurately and efficiently.
- Performs phlebotomy and may assist in specific laboratory functions relative to testing, reporting, and quality assurance of laboratory specimens.
- Performs receptionist and clerical duties, including matching and filing ancillary department reports, consultation, and other medical reports in patients’ medical records.
- Documents in the appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record.
- Uses the electronic medical record and scheduling system as designated.
- Facilitates timely appointments for patients, completes referrals and pre-authorizations as needed, and collects co-payments.
- Assists with orientation of new personnel under the direction of the provider and/or site lead.
- Executes and documents ongoing patient communication, prioritizes communications to the provider, and responds to patient questions to ensure efficient use of provider time.
- Reinforces patient education as directed by the provider to support patient understanding of instructions.
- May inventory medical/surgical supplies and pharmaceuticals (non-controlled substances) to ensure adequate supply levels, verify expiration dates, and optimize organizational efficiency.
- May have access to non-controlled medication storage/supply areas and transport non-controlled medications as necessary.
- Prepares and cleans instruments, follows protocols for sterilization and disinfection, including high-level disinfection of instruments and equipment.
- Cleans and sets up examination rooms between patients using established infection prevention protocols.
- Follows hand hygiene and appropriate infection prevention precautions.
- Routinely inspects and observes condition and operation of diagnostic equipment to ensure proper function and identifies need for maintenance.
- Actively participates in patient safety and quality improvement programs.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited 1-year certificate or 2-year diploma Medical Assistant program (preferred).
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) required.
- Certification by one of the following governing associations: NHA, AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, AAH, or AMCA.
- Minimum of 1 year of related work experience (preferred).
- Basic Life Support Certification within 6 months of hire.

Pay
This position qualifies for a $3,000 sign-on bonus paid over two years (certain stipulations apply).
