Responsibilities
- Gather and document patient screening data, obtain vitals, prepare charts, draw labs, and maintain the work area
- Assist providers, manage referrals, and prepare patient charts to ensure prioritized patient care throughout treatment and disease process
- Prepare and organize patient charts for provider review by ensuring all clinical documentation, laboratory results, imaging, medication histories, and relevant medical records are complete and accurately updated prior to appointments
- Coordinate and assist with new patient referral processes, including obtaining and reviewing medical records, communicating with referring providers and patients, scheduling appointments, and ensuring timely and seamless continuity of care
- Obtain missing medical records, lab, pathology, and x-ray reports from previous visits before the next physician visit
- Escort patients to triage, infusion, or physician exam areas; ensure pre-exam labs are obtained according to lab protocols
- Obtain vital signs and weight; record height on initial visit and annually
- Assist with renewing prescriptions; verify necessary information and record in the medical record
- Prepare patients for exams based on patient and clinical condition; track patients through entry to next point of service
- Coordinate patient appointments, relay necessary messages to staff, and maintain current information on physician schedules to ensure proper scheduling and confirmed appointments
- Answer questions regarding patient appointments and testing; chart records as needed for communication
- Complete billing events before end of shift accurately and timely
- Administer injections to patients under the direction of a nurse or provider after assessment and direct instruction
- Perform laboratory work and draw specimens per physician order using venipuncture or fingerstick technique
- Test specimens for hematology and urinalysis; process all laboratory specimens
- Perform data entry of point-of-care labs after physician review
- Review registration sheet with new patients to ensure completion of history; enter medications and allergies in EMR/chart
- Comply with local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to the clinical laboratory
- Complete daily checklists and OSHA checklists
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Three (3) years of medical experience
- Certified Medical Assistant credential
- Knowledge of the healthcare field and medical specialty
- Knowledge of specific assistance tasks related to a particular medical specialty
- Knowledge of information that must be conveyed to patients and families
This position requires travel to three (3) LOA office locations, including but not limited to: North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, and West Ashley. This role reports to the LOA Osteoporosis Center.
