About the role
The Medical Assistant at PHMC Congreso Health Center plays a crucial role in supporting direct patient services. They work collaboratively with all Clinical services staff, ensuring quality of care and customer service. The position requires the MA to serve as a point of contact, promoting patient comfort and trust. The MA reports to the Health Center Administrator and must exemplify the organization's core values and mission.
Responsibilities
- Triage patients, including blood pressure, weight, height, pulse, and temperature.
- Administer injections, immunizations, and venipuncture according to orders in the EHR for adults and children.
- Collect lab specimens.
- Perform EKG if needed.
- Report to other sites as needed.
- Handle all front desk functions in a primary care setting.
- Schedule appointments, including specialty and ancillary appointments.
- Answer phones and handle patient registration data entry.
- Verify insurance and batch encounter forms daily.
- Follow up for reports from specialists and assist patients as needed.
- Assist providers and clinical staff as needed.
- Review patients' charts and encounter forms for completion, scan reports to the EHR, and distribute them.
- Retrieve prescription refills and voicemails daily.
- Report incidents as they occur and complete assigned training as required.
- Utilize CPR skills if necessary.
- Translate using Spanish (if bilingual).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Compliance Responsibilities
- Understands and adheres to PHMC compliance standards.
- Keeps abreast of relevant federal, state, and PHMC regulations.
- Complies with HIPAA and Confidentiality Policies and Procedures.
- Adheres to Department of Public Health (DPH), Joint Commission, and other accreditation and regulatory agencies’ standards.
- Maintains MDS sheets according to federal and state regulatory agencies.
- Maintains all required certifications and completes continuing education requirements.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- A diploma from an accredited Medical Assistant program is required.
- Medical Assistant certification required.
- CPR certification required.
- Experience in a clinical laboratory/medical office environment for 1-2 years required.
- Phlebotomy and lab skills.
- Fluency in Spanish.
- Knowledge of billing procedures and insurance verification.
- Data entry skills.
- Familiarity with Managed Care Plans and referral processes.
- Knowledge of ICD 9/10 codes.
- Extensive medical terminology.
- Extensive organizational skills.
- Pleasant manner.
- Ability to assist clinical staff when required.
- Flexibility to manage and complete work assigned.
