Job Summary
The CMA provides clinical support to physicians and nurses, as well as clerical support for new and existing patients for check-in, registration, scheduling, and check-out. Assists patients and visitors with questions and concerns.
Essential Functions
- Trains new hires on policy and procedures.
- Schedules appointments, greets, checks-in and checks-out all visitors and patients.
- Collects appropriate deposits and co-pay amounts at registration and/or check out.
- Escorts patients to examination rooms and completes patient pre-assessment (vital signs).
- Provides first aid treatment (dressing changes, etc).
- Prepares medication listing for physician. Reviews listing at each visit to ensure accuracy.
- Maintains patient charts; completes disability forms upon request and maintains HIPAA documents.
- Maintains proper inventory and removes expired medications and orders supplies.
- Maintains biohazard waste logs to ensure compliance with waste disposal.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Clinical Services Coordinator, Physician and/or Manager.
Physical Requirements
- Sit, stand, walk, use hands, reach, talk, and hear; close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less).
- May be exposed to blood, body fluids or tissue as defined by Blood Borne Pathogen Control Plan.
- Able to lift and carry up to 24 pounds occasionally.
Mental Requirements
- Able to read and interpret business or safety manuals, clinical or technical procedures or regulations, write reports, correspondence and/or manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, patients, families, other employees and medical staff.
- Able to interpret verbal, nonverbal and written instructions.
Age Groups
- This position primarily interacts with adults and aging adults and provides patient care.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of an accredited medical assisting program with one year of patient care experience preferred.
- Certified through the American Medical Technologist (AMT) or American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or National Health career Association (NHA) or MedCA as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
