Positional Summary

Perform a variety of administrative and patient care supportive duties in Student Health. Assist administrative, medical and/or nursing staff in the registration, examination and treatment of patients, ensuring the office runs smoothly.

Key Position Duties

  • Patient Registration - 45% of Effort
    • Register and process appointment check in and check out in the electronic medical records systems.
      • Enter and/or verify health insurance information and collect payments as necessary.
      • Check to ensure eligibility for students.
      • Schedule appointments for new and returning student patients.
      • Cover Prior Authorizations.
      • Cover care and referral scheduling.
  • Clinical Care - 45% of Effort
    • Aid medical and nursing staff in a variety of tasks including:
      • Taking medical histories and recording vital signs.
      • Explaining treatment procedures to patients and preparing patients for examinations and procedures.
      • Aiding the physician during the examination and procedures.
      • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens and perform basic laboratory tests on the premises.
      • Dispose of contaminated supplies.
      • Sterilize medical instruments.
      • Promote patient/family understanding of the educational content and his/her involvement in the plan of care, and document in patient record.
      • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
      • Authorize drug refills as directed and telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy.
      • Draw blood.
      • Prepare patients for x-rays, tests and procedures.
      • Take electrocardiograms.
      • Remove sutures/staples.
  • Patient Relations - 5% of Effort
    • Provide information to other clinics and ancillary services.
    • Provide routine information regarding Student Health services and direct patients to assigned area and other locations upon request.
  • Other - 5% of Effort
    • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Qualifications, Skills, And Competencies Required

  • Minimum Qualifications: High school or GED graduation required. Graduation from accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred. Certification or Registration by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA required.
  • Minimum Experience: No experience required.

Preferred Education And Experiences

  • Education: Graduation from a Medical Assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).
  • Experience: Certifications: Certification by AAMA preferred. One year of work in a health care setting is preferred. Experience in college health or an ambulatory care setting is preferred.

Preferred Skills And Competencies

  • Skills: Patient Interaction, Team Collaboration, Cultural Sensitivity, Multitasking and Time Management, Attention to Detail, Ability to use Epic and other medical software.
  • Competencies: Vital Signs and Patient Prep, Phlebotomy and Injection, Basic Lab Procedures, EKG and Diagnostic Support, Basic Life Support, Scheduling and Coordination, Inventory Management, Healthcare Regulations, Clinical Procedures.

Anticipated Pay Range

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $20.00 to USD $25.39.
