Overview

A Certified Cancer Registrar identifies, registers, analyzes, and reports cancer registry information to support cancer surveillance, treatment planning, research, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Certification as a CTR (Certified Tumor Registrar) is required.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of medical terminology, typing and basic computer skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and organize and prioritize work.

Education And/or Other Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Certification as a CTR is required.
  • Two years previous experience in cancer registry.

Environmental Factors

  • Minimal exposure to irritating, unpleasant or hazardous elements or conditions.

Physical Demands

  • Light physical exertion, including occasional standing, bending, reaching and occasional carrying of light loads.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work under stress, adapt to changing conditions and exercise appropriate independent judgment.
  • Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Complies with American College of Surgeons standards for cancer registry operations, including accurate collection and analysis of reportable cancer diagnosis data.
  • Abstracts cancer registry data sets in accordance with established national standards and reporting requirements.
  • Obtains, updates, and maintains ongoing follow-up information for all patients within the cancer registry database.
  • SUBMITS REQUIRED REPORTS MONTHLY TO THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH, ANNUALLY TO THE NATIONAL CANCER DATA BASE, AND PROVIDES ADDITIONAL REPORTS TO PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS AS REQUESTED.
  • Maintains active Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential through required continuing education, in-services, and professional meetings to ensure competency and professional development.
  • PERFORMS ADDITIONAL DUTIES AS ASSIGNED BY THE MEDICAL DIRECTOR OR ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR.
