Certified Backflow Technician

Job Purpose Summary

This position is responsible for assisting in the maintenance, repair, installation and inspection of all backflow devices within the District.

Backflow Technician

  • Inspect backflow assembly installation ensuring it meets applicable plumbing codes and rules.
  • Maintains and investigates the maintenance and replacement requirements of backflow prevention assemblies through annual inspections.
  • Creates and maintains information files including equipment and inspection data.
  • Completes all annual backflow inspections in a timely manner.
  • Completes all inspection reports and sends them to prospective entities to ensure compliance.
  • Reads and interprets schematics, blueprints, manuals, and other technical drawings.
  • Repairs, replaces, or installs plumbing within the District.
  • Operates tools, equipment, and machinery in accordance with prescribed safety procedures.
  • Affixes with maintaining and repairing drains throughout the district.
  • Assists in cataloging district plumbing equipment information.
  • Works with outside contractors, as needed.
  • Performs other ad-hoc repairs, as needed.
  • Affixes with other personnel, as needed.
  • Transports various items including, without limitation, tools, equipment, and supplies, to specified job location to carry out assigned tasks.
  • Operates equipment including, without limitation, District vehicles, electric carts, electric power lifts, and use of ladders.

Irrigation Specialist

  • Repairs, replaces and installs various types of irrigation systems to ensure optimal functioning is maintained.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots issues in both two wire and four wire irrigation systems, or as otherwise directed.
  • Programs timers, performs diagnostics and completes repairs of sprinkler control problems.
  • Excavates and digs trenches for laying irrigation lines or installing system components to ensure precise execution and minimal disruption to surrounding areas.
  • Prepares new irrigation sites by adjusting terrain to enhance water distribution and drainage efficiency.
  • Affixes other personnel by providing technical support and expertise, as needed.
  • Affixes in conducting evaluations of existing irrigation systems to identify potential improvements and/or necessary upgrades.
  • Affixes with water use audits to ensure the irrigation system operates at maximum efficiency and minimal waste.
  • Adheres to adjustments in irrigation schedules and settings based on seasonal weather conditions and plant requirements or as otherwise directed.
  • Supports the implementation of upgrades to existing systems, as directed, to incorporate new irrigation technologies to enhance system performance and sustainability.
  • Participates in, and promotes, recycling and other sustainability initiatives, as directed.
  • Affixes in identifying opportunities for waste reduction, and the optimization of environmental outcomes in daily operations.
  • Participates in special projects, as assigned.

Compliance

Purpose

Consistently demonstrates support towards the District's Shared Vision, Mission, and Promise 2 Purpose. Assists department leadership in the compilation of miscellaneous confidential reports. Attends departmental and District meetings, as required. Consistently displays integrity, responsibility, accountability, teamwork, and ethics. Performs assigned job duties and responsibilities in accordance with established performance expectations, as well as with District policies, procedures, protocols, and standard practices. Maintains relevant and up-to-date job knowledge by participating in continuous education initiatives. Demonstrates proficient working knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook, Google Shared applications to include Google Sheets, Google Docs, and Google Slides, as well as database systems and applications relevant to the job function. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education, Experience & Credential Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED
  • Active, Valid and In Good Standing Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) license through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
  • Three years' experience as an irrigation specialist
  • Active, Valid and In Good Standing Texas Driver's License.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • This position requires prolonged periods of standing and walking, along with frequent climbing, lifting, carrying and/or moving objects of up to 50 lbs., balancing, stooping, digging, bending and operating of heavy machinery.
  • This position requires physical strength to handle materials and endurance to perform labor-intensive tasks throughout the workday.
  • The work environment alternates between climate-controlled areas and setting without climate control with exposure to diverse and potentially extreme conditions including, without limitation, fluctuating temperatures, dust, fumes, vapors, and odors, as well as chemical, mechanical and electrical hazards.
  • This position requires the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and will frequently operate a motor vehicle on public roadways to commute to different locations, as assigned, within the District.
