About the role
The certified athletic trainer will provide athletic training services, under the direction of a licensed physician, for patients in the clinic. These services include the rendering of urgent care, assessment, management, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning of patients whose conditions align with the professional preparation and education of the certified athletic trainer. This role is a member of the patient care team, assisting physicians to maintain smooth operations, continuity of patient care, and client satisfaction.
Responsibilities
- Obtains vital signs, medication list, allergies, patient history, and initial evaluation information correctly.
- Teaches and instructs through home exercise programs, physical rehabilitation, and brace/splint/crutch fitting.
- Performs callbacks to deliver prompt, prioritized patient care (e.g., patient, pharmacies, insurance companies) and secures prior authorizations when necessary.
- Assists with set-up and procedures for joint injections, cast applications and removal, debridements, and suture care and removal.
- Orders, collects, and labels laboratory specimens; assists providers in clean or sterile procedures.
- Efficiently documents medical information using appropriate electronic applications and/or forms.
- Relays telephone messages appropriately to the physician.
- Assists with simple patient teaching regarding procedures, laboratory tests, and medications.
- Applies proper techniques for hand washing, instrument handling and care, cleaning of exam rooms and equipment, and use of personal protective clothing/equipment.
- Maintains cleanliness of equipment, examination, and treatment rooms; ensures exam rooms are stocked with necessary supplies and materials.
- Prepares lists of supplies needed.
- Ensures patient safety by communicating patient safety and care issues through appropriate channels.
- Respects patients’ rights, including confidentiality of patient information.
- Maintains smooth flow of patients through the clinic.
- Assesses and corrects patient rooms and surrounding areas for safety.
- Participates in intra- and inter-departmental committee activities.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Physical Education, or a related field from a 4-year college or university (Required).
- Master’s Degree (Preferred).
- 1 year of athletic training experience (Preferred).
- Athletic Trainer (AT) license from the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts (KSBHA) (Required).
Travel Requirements
Up to 5% travel, including seasonal travel to accommodate physician visits to Washburn University as part of the sports medicine agreement.
Physical Demands
- Continuously (greater than 5 hours per shift): Balancing, carrying, crouching, eye/hand/foot coordination, fine motor grasping, gross hand grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting (up to 50 lbs), operating foot controls, pulling (up to 50 lbs), pushing (up to 50 lbs), reaching forward (up to 50 lbs), reaching overhead (up to 50 lbs), repetitive motions, sitting, standing, stooping, talking, walking.
- Occasionally (1-3 hours per shift): Climbing stairs, exposure to burns, chemicals, infectious diseases, noise/sounds, risk of exposure to blood and body fluids, risk of exposure to hazardous drugs, other hazards.
- Rarely (less than 1 hour per shift): Climbing ladders, crawling, combative patients, dusts, electrical hazards, needle stick, vibration.
