About the role

The School Nursing position is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being and academic success of students. School nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems. They work within and outside the school district to develop, monitor, and assess outcomes of nursing care plans.

Responsibilities

  • Uses a systematic approach to problem solving in nursing practice.
    • Provides written Nursing Care Plan for students with significant health problems.
    • Affirms student health needs, recommends appropriate actions, monitors communicable diseases and other illnesses.
    • Involves in CPS referrals in conjunction with counselors, administration and other staff.
    • Nursing evaluation is required in all cases involving physical injury.
    • Assesses needs of students with long-term illness or injury by collaborating with healthcare providers, student and family, including home visits when necessary, to coordinate home instruction as needed.
    • Initiates involvement of external resources to address individual student health issues.
  • Establishes and maintains a comprehensive school health program.
    • Maintains accurate maintenance of student health and immunization records.
    • Conducts screening programs for vision, hearing, and scoliosis.
    • Consults with students, parents, and staff regarding health needs and services.
    • Completes written reports as required by state or local agencies.
    • Works with the State Health Department in controlling communicable diseases.
    • Serves as a liaison between home, school, and community resources regarding health issues.
    • Maintains standard health room procedures with cooperation of Health Services Assistants, Office Staff, and Principal for day-to-day health room management, including medication administration, first aid, illness procedures, and BECCA and attendance issues.
  • Manages professional responsibilities.
    • Identifies, delineates, and clarifies the nursing role, promotes quality of care, pursues continuous professional enhancement, and demonstrates professional conduct.
    • Maintains First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
    • Participates in continuing professional education through attendance at classes, conferences, etc.
    • Keeps abreast of current legislation pertaining to school nurses.
    • Participates in professional conferences with community agencies.
    • Serves as a resource to staff, students, and/or parents concerning health issues.
    • Maintains confidentiality within legal, regulatory, and ethical parameters of Health and Education.
  • Engages in health education.
    • Affords students, families, and the school community opportunities to achieve optimal levels of wellness through appropriately designed and delivered health education.
    • Collaborates with classroom staff on health curriculum, such as HIV/AIDS, BAT, Family Life, Babysitting.
    • Conducts inservice training for staff regarding Diabetes, Medication Administration, Epi-pen use, bloodborne pathogens, first aid, and/or other health matters.
    • Provides Health counseling and information on chronic illness, nutrition, disease prevention, and positive lifestyle.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Washington State Educational Staff Associates School Nurse Certificate

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in school nursing or health education

Additional Requirements

  • Scheduled hours on a consistent basis

Physical Demands

Work Schedule

This is a school year position.

Reporting Relationship

The position reports to and will be evaluated by the building administrator, or designee.
