About the role

As a member of the Support Services Department, the Central Transporter transports patients and charts (following HIPAA Security Guidelines) throughout the BVRHC campus. This position also includes occasional pick-up and delivery of specimens, equipment, and supplies as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Transports patients, associated charts, and necessary equipment to and from various patient service departments in a timely, professional, and courteous manner to ensure efficient patient flow and adherence to hospital values through a ‘service excellence’ approach. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of pertinent policies and procedures.
  • Accurately utilizes the internal SRC and pager system to communicate continuous patient flow information to the correct patient service departments via SRC associates.
  • Prepares wheelchairs, stretchers, and oxygen following established policies and procedures, ensuring constant availability for patient needs. Maintains supplies and equipment in good working order.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the general functions of various patient service departments and monitors the need for oxygen and other equipment during patient transport.
  • Provides care appropriate to the age of the patient, assesses data reflecting the patient’s status, and interprets this information to meet the patient’s requirements in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Exercises good judgment in potential problem situations and communicates pertinent information to the Logistics Supervisor in a timely manner. Attends department meetings when practical and participates in continuous improvement efforts to enhance service quality and patient care.

Requirements

  • Proven ability to read, write, speak English, follow written and oral instructions, and perform basic mathematical functions.
  • Positive service-oriented interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Compressions-only CPR certification required within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to work well within a team environment, including accepting and offering constructive feedback, supporting team goals, and collaborating with patient care team members.
  • Self-directed in executing responsibilities within a team structure and takes initiative to contribute beyond formal duties (e.g., suggesting innovative ideas or providing feedback on team direction).
  • Flexibility and adaptability in meeting environmental constraints and service demands.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, frequently push, pull, and lift patients, clean equipment, and materials.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served, including assessing data reflective of patient status and interpreting age-specific needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Experience in healthcare or public contact.

Physical Demands

  • Requires full range of body motion with continuous activity in walking, lifting, bending, squatting, kneeling, and standing.
  • Must occasionally lift 50 pounds and frequently lift 35 pounds; must push patients in wheelchairs (100–350 lbs).
  • Must be able to reach work above the shoulders and have good eye/hand coordination for pushing, pulling, grasping, and fine manipulation.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing within the normal range, as well as excellent verbal skills for interviewing patients.
  • Classified as “at risk” for possible occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens (e.g., HBV, HIV).
