About the Role

Performs decontamination, high-level disinfection, and sterilization of medical, surgical, and gastroenterology instruments/equipment. Prioritizes and coordinates work for the Operating Room (OR), cleans and leak-tests endoscopes, assists with assembly of case carts for OR, maintains event-related sterility, and monitors instrument repair.

Requirements

  • Successfully passed a nationally accredited central service exam for central service technicians.
  • Holds and maintains one of the following credentials:
    • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST)
    • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT)
    • Substantially equivalent credential
  • One year of cumulative employment or contracted service as a central service technician in a healthcare facility within the four years prior to January 1, 2015. If not met, must obtain CRCST or CSPDT credential within 18 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Completes assignments per unit policy and demonstrates proper knowledge of instruments and instrument sets.
  • Participates in and actively supports Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Completes annual education updates and assists in orienting new personnel, including Endo Techs, Nurses, or Students.
  • Demonstrates unit-specific competencies and cross-training in OR/Endo areas.
  • Exercises good judgment and planning in responding to requests, with an appreciation for cost and quality.
  • Responds to staffing needs, schedule changes, and assignment adjustments in CP, Endo, and OR.
  • Follows the chain of command for problem resolution and adheres to Standards of Practice.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Assists, supervises, delegates, or consults with other staff members as needed.
  • Coordinates simultaneous work requirements and completes all scheduled assignments without sacrificing quality.
  • Demonstrates flexibility to adjust personal schedule based on fluctuating workload and departmental demands.
  • Completes all assigned duties during the shift and uses additional time to assist others.
  • Orders and stocks supplies, maintains a clean and ready work area, and recognizes and prioritizes tasks appropriately.
  • Reports suggestions or recommendations for departmental improvements to the manager.
  • Demonstrates willingness to learn new procedures, accept new responsibilities, and cross-train as needed.
  • Schedules benefit time appropriately and maintains acceptable attendance.
  • Follows Standard Precautions and disease-specific precautions per CDC guidelines.
  • Provides timely notification for absence or tardiness (4 hours for 3–11 shift; 1 hour for 7–3 shift).
  • Arrives on time for scheduled shifts and returns promptly after breaks.
  • Observes dress code, wears identification badge, and maintains a professional appearance.
  • Maintains a positive attitude and working relationship with all internal and external customers.
  • Assists in pulling cases as needed and strictly adheres to Central Processing policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of decontamination for all surgical instruments and endoscopes.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization equipment (e.g., sterilizers, Steris processor, sonic washer, pasteurizer, Sterrad).
  • Understands Bowie Dick Test and appropriate steps if results are positive for CP or OR.
  • Maintains Sterility and Implant Log for all sterilizers, Cidex, and Steris processors in CPD, OR, and Endoscopy.
  • Demonstrates how to recall equipment based on sterility monitoring if needed.

Pay

$17.57 - $25.32/hour, depending on experience.
