Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Decontaminates and sterilizes instruments, medical supplies and equipment, and assembles wraps and sterilizes trays of instruments.
- Follows proper Standard Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas.
- Sorts mismatched sets of instruments, trays, and medical equipment and makes them available to sterile processing customers in a timely manner.
- Accurately records and maintains sterilizer test results. Performs biological and chemical control functions of sterilization equipment per protocol.
- Restocks, labels, and maintains inventory, submits requisitions, collects and distributes instruments, trays, and equipment.
- Verifies that equipment functions properly, troubleshoots equipment malfunction, requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair or replacement, and removes and identifies defective equipment.
- Maintains a clean work area.
- Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards.

Professional Requirements
- Meets dress code standards and adheres to policy in the Operating Room.
- Completes annual education requirements.
- Maintains regulatory requirements.
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
- Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.
- Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion.
- Attends annual review and department in-services, as scheduled.
- Attends monthly staff meetings or reads meeting minutes.
- Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.
- Promotes professional growth of subordinates by sharing knowledge and/or directing them to sources if information appropriate to given situation. Utilizes journals, books, etc. to learn and/or improve new techniques and equipment.
Regulatory Requirements
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Minimum 2 years' experience in central processing preferred
- Current CRCST Certification preferred
- Knowledge of central processing/sterilization/instrumentation
- Current BCLS certification recommended
Skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Basic computer knowledge.
