CENTRAL SERVICES TECHNICIAN II
About the role
The DHS is seeking a dedicated Central Services Technician to join our team. This role offers opportunities to grow your career while serving diverse communities across LA County.
Responsibilities
- Assembles utensil sets, single package instruments, sterile containers, and trays for sterilization.
- Operates steam and gas sterilizers, autoclaves, and other sterilization, cleaning, and reprocessing equipment.
- Fills emergency requests and suggests substitute items to medical and nursing staff if the requested item is out of stock.
- Loads and unloads supply carts and delivers sterile-processed supplies to service areas; collects and delivers used supplies back to the processing area.
- Disassembles, decontaminates, cleans, and reassembles medical, surgical, and patient care supplies, including surgical instruments, according to established procedures.
- Orients and trains new staff in the performance of any or all central service procedures, as needed.
Requirements
- One (1) year experience as a Central Services Technician I.
- OR - One (1) year experience cleaning, assembling, packaging, and sterilizing medical, surgical, and nursing supplies, instruments, and equipment.
- Applicants with only six (6) months of experience may qualify if they have completed a Central Services Technician course in an accredited vocational school or community college.
Desirable Qualifications
- Additional experience beyond the requirements cleaning, assembling, packaging, and sterilizing medical, surgical, and nursing supplies, instruments, and equipment.
- Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST).
Special Requirement Information
- To qualify under this option, you must hold or have held the payroll title of Central Services Technician I.
- If needed to qualify, please provide a legible copy of your official transcripts for completion of a central services technician course from an accredited vocational school or community college at the time of filing, or emailing the document to the Exam Analyst at bsarkissian@dhs.lacounty.gov within seven (7) calendar days from the application filing date.
- The CRCST will be verified by using the information on the Healthcare Processing Association (HSPA) using the website at https://myhspa.org/index.php
Prior Experience
Additional credit will be given to applicants who have the following desirable qualifications:
Physical Class III - Moderate
This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
Eligibility Information
- We process applications as we receive them. If you pass the assessment, we will place you on a list for 12 months.
- Hiring managers within DHS will use this list to fill vacancies as they become available.
- Applicants who are successful in this examination and are added to the eligible register may not apply for this examination for twelve (12) months following the date of being placed on the eligible register.
- Applications received before expiration from the eligible register will be rejected.
- Applicants who have applied and did not fulfill the Requirements when submitting their application may reapply 30 days from their latest application date.
Shift Information
Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

The eligible register resulting from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services.
