Cement Finisher

About the role

Cement finishers are responsible for placement and surface preparation of concrete in conformance with the project requirements. This is a safety-sensitive position.

Responsibilities

• Position themselves on the concrete forms and move the pump hose or concrete bucket into place for the pouring of the concrete.
• Level the top surface of freshly poured concrete on floors, walls, ceilings, or sidewalks.
• Finish the concrete surface to meet the tolerances for thickness and flatness before the concrete has cured.
• Strike the concrete with a screed to create a level, smooth surface.
• Apply a bull float to the concrete to further smooth the surface and bring moisture to the top of the concrete area.
• Apply hardening and sealing compounds to cure the surface of concrete, including waterproofing, damp-proofing, and restoring concrete surfaces.
• Install anchor bolts, steel plates, and other fixtures in freshly poured concrete.
• Operate a trowel to finish the surface when the concrete has reached a semi-cured status, using both mechanical and hand trowels.
• Promote a safe work environment and communicate jobsite hazards.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Follow safe work practices in accordance with the Hensel Phelps safety and health program.
• Ability to take initiative and possess keen attention to detail.
• Must be able to follow instructions and communicate effectively and professionally.
• Workers must provide their own safety footwear.
• Strong mathematical reasoning and quantitative skills.
• Must be reliable and punctual.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in construction layout, blueprint reading, and shop drawing reading.
• OSHA 10 Certification.
• CPR & First Aid Certification.

Physical Requirements

• Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Periodically walk, kneel, sit, crouch, reach, stoop, read/see, speak, push, pull, lift, stand, and use fingers/type.
• Frequently move about the jobsite.
• Frequently communicate with employees and external stakeholders.
• Constantly read written communications, blueprints, load charts, and take/verify field measurements.
• Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps at various heights.
• Working from heights for extended amounts of time.
• Balancing: Maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling.
• Stooping: Bending the body downward and forward by the spine at the waist.
• Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction for various lengths of time.
• Grasping: Apply pressure to an object with fingers and palm regularly.
• Visual acuity and ability to operate a vehicle.
• Occasionally exposed to high and low temperatures.
• Frequently exposed to noisy environments and outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
• Use of hands and wrists with various tools, including prolonged use of jackhammers and pavement breakers.
• Use of wheelbarrows and brooms.
• Repetitive use of hands and wrists using power, rotational, and vibration tools.
• Tolerate legally permissible exposure to dusts and chemicals, such as cement dust, solvents, and curing compounds.
• Must be able to safely wear a respirator and pass applicable medical and fit testing examinations.
• Must be able to hear commands from supervisors and back-up safety alarms on equipment.
