About the role

Perform and track daily inspection of construction work on a variety of roadway projects.

Responsibilities

  • Perform work under moderate supervision; receive direction on moderately complex assignments, tasks, and execution.
  • Review work produced by junior staff for quality assurance.
  • Assist in the maintenance of existing client relationships.
  • Observe and inspect construction work and prepare daily inspection reports and constructability reviews.
  • Oversee daily construction work including work zone traffic control, earthwork, erosion control, asphalt paving, concrete paving, drainage structure installation, reinforced concrete, and equipment installation.
  • Ensure construction work complies with specifications and contract documents.
  • Review coordinated sets of working drawings.
  • Complete daily calculating, reporting, documenting, and communicating verbally and in writing.
  • Compute quantities for items such as concrete, asphalt, steel, earthwork, drainage structures, and traffic control devices.
  • Operate company vehicle, computer, and testing equipment.
  • Analyze shop drawings of moderate complexity.
  • Maintain daily job log.
  • Refer and report problems and deviations from plans and specifications to management.
  • Participate in reviewing submittals, assisting with RFIs, and other related activities.
  • May give direction to contractors and act as field engineer representative and owner's representative regarding problem solving and field changes.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma (GED) required; engineering program completion preferred, commensurate experience considered.
  • Three or more (3+) years of construction/inspection experience on roadway projects required.
  • Experience on DOT or municipal roadway projects including daily records and reports on asphalt paving, concrete work, grading, structural work, and erosion control preferred.
  • DOT CEI Certifications are a plus.
  • May be required to participate in certification and training courses post-hire as required by OSHA, DOT, or client-specific requirements (e.g., concrete, asphalt certifications, erosion control, and safety training).
  • Knowledge of road and bridge construction techniques, design, DOT specifications and documents, standard operations, policies, and procedures of a firm, preferably within the A/E industry required.
  • Experience using tools and equipment such as air meter, slump cone, transit, level, and tape measure preferred.
  • Required SCDOT certifications: SCDOT Asphalt Roadway Technician, SCDOT Earthwork/Base/Drainage, Pile Driving Inspection, Drilled Shaft Inspection, SCDOT Concrete Level 1 & 2.
  • CEPSCI certification preferred.

  • Primarily outdoor work environment which may include adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards.
  • Mobility around a job/construction site to include walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling and wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Partly indoor professional office environment which may include bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.
  • Mobility around an office environment.
  • Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
  • Primarily local travel during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.
  • Occasional lifting or carrying up to 75 pounds.
  • Occasional pushing or pulling up to 75 pounds.
  • Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.
