CDOC Boiler House Lieutenant CSTS II (Buena Vista)

About the role

This position is the Boiler House Lieutenant for the Buena Vista Correctional Complex, a Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) prison facility in Buena Vista, CO. The primary responsibilities include ensuring the safety and security of the facility and its occupants, supervising assigned staff and inmate work crews, and promoting the Colorado Department of Corrections Mission, Vision, and Values.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the safety and security of facility and work sites through clear and accurate communication, training and guiding staff and inmates in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals.
• Train and instruct staff and inmates in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment and procedures to ensure efficient, safe, and effective completion of assigned tasks by stressing safe construction practices and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Ensure safe, efficient, compliant and cost-effective execution of assigned tasks and projects by performing "hands-on" instructional work alongside staff and inmates.
• Coordinate logistical support with other trades and shops in order to use resources efficiently; monitor progress and quality of work; complete required documentation such as work orders and incident reports; provide assistance as necessary to other operational areas of the maintenance department.
• Ensure all work completed is in compliance with the American Correctional Association (ACA) and any other applicable agency; local, state or federal regulations, policy, and standards; maintain accurate and timely documentation and record keeping for all assigned areas.
• Implement procedures for efficient inventory and elimination of theft, waste, and loss and initiate requisitions for additional supply purchases, ensuring accountability and proper processing.
• Update drawings and maintain records, files, and drawings, ensuring the availability of maintenance manuals pertinent to this field of expertise.

Requirements

This position requires the following:

• A minimum of five (5) years of employment experience in boiler operations performing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance.
• Active Colorado Stationary Engineer License within four (4) years of hire.
• Completion of formal education at an accredited, non-correspondence trade/vocational school, college or university that resulted in demonstrated competencies equivalent to those gained through the required experience, or a combination of work experience as described above.
• Ability to create a cohesive team while mentoring and motivating assigned staff, self-motivated, tactful and diplomatic interpersonal skills, exceptional discernment and decision-making skills, excellent time management skills, excellent communication skills, determination to pay special attention to details and follow instruction, knowledge of and ability to perform design, installation and maintenance of Boiler systems, knowledge of all factors involved in coordination of a project, especially the unique aspect within a prison facility, ability to read blueprints and plan and implement Physical Plant projects, determination to follow policy and provide efficient, effective service while utilizing state resources responsibly, ability to perform intermediate computer keyboarding skills, manipulate computerized inventory module, and communicate via computer based e-mail, ability to effectively work with inmates through daily supervision and instruction while working in a variety of settings, self-control, a strong sense of ability to work in stressful, potentially violent situations, ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure and observant throughout their shift, ability to respond to emergency situations involving inmates or maintenance issues, ability to climb stairs and ladders and work in high, tight and confined spaces, ability to read and comprehend the English language, ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.

  Pay

  The resulting eligibility list may be used to fill future vacancies. The position is compensated on a bi-weekly pay cycle.

The position is subject to facility call back, working additional hours or shifts to maintain safety and security, working shift work and rotating weekends, working outside during inclement weather, and in close proximity to industrial equipment.
