Responsibilities
- Operate a residential/recycling collection truck (side-load and/or rear-load) and ancillary equipment to collect solid waste and/or recyclables on specified routes.
- Load solid waste, yard waste, and/or recyclables into the rear or side of the waste collection vehicle.
- Operate equipment to compact trash into the vehicle using prescribed techniques to prevent driver-induced mechanical failures.
- Complete pre-trip and post-trip safety lane inspections, daily truck reports, route sheets, and other required documentation.
- Communicate vehicle mechanical problems to mechanics and supervisors immediately.
- Maintain route quality standards as predetermined by management.
- Follow all safety standards, equipment checks, and precautions in performance of duties.
- Comply with federal, state/provincial, local, and company rules on safety and vehicle operation.
- Maintain vehicle cleanliness by cleaning the cab interior and exterior.
- Identify and tag prohibited waste items, removing them from waste carts or cans.
- Manage assigned Helper(s), if applicable.
- Conform to all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.
- Wear all required personal protective equipment (e.g., gloves, reflective vest, safety glasses, work boots).
- Report all accidents or incidents to supervisors immediately.
- Maintain a professional demeanor, manner, and appearance at all times.
- Maintain accurate records of services performed and inventory of containers, carts, and spare parts.
- Recommend purchase of additional containers, carts, and spare parts to supervisors.
- Work closely with supervisors to improve routing efficiencies.
- May be required to work overtime.
- Attend safety and branch meetings.
- Perform other duties as required or requested by management.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED desired.
- Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Minimum one (1) year of commercial driving experience OR CDL school certificate.
- Must meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to company standards.
- Ability to safely drive the truck and operate equipment.
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of truck components and basic maintenance for safe operation.
- Ability to control and maneuver the truck in tight spaces, including backing up distances of approximately 120 feet or more using mirrors.
- Ability to recognize unacceptable waste (e.g., gasoline or other flammable materials).
- Effective communication with internal and external customers.
- Ability to read, write, and comprehend documents and maps.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Flexibility to adapt to change and commitment to continuous improvement.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 pounds repetitively using proper techniques.
- Ability to coordinate limbs (e.g., arms and legs) while sitting or standing.
Physical & Mental Demands
- Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell.
- Visual requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus for maneuvering in tight and high-traffic areas.
- Ability to lift/move up to 10 pounds regularly, 25 pounds frequently, and 100 pounds occasionally.
- Sitting may be required up to 75% of the time due to driving responsibilities.
- Ability to work in loud conditions.
Working Conditions
- Frequently exposed to loud noise, humidity, extreme hot and cold weather, moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic/caustic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Work outdoors up to 100% of the time, often away from the branch location throughout the day.
- Occasionally work in high or precarious places.
- Constant exposure to motor vehicle traffic conditions.
- Work environment is usually loud.
