CDL Driver - Swing

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate one or more vehicle types with both automatic and standard transmission and collect solid waste, yard waste and/or recyclables on a collection route.
  • Routinely inspect and report on pre-trip and post-trip safety lane inspections, daily truck report, route sheets, and other documentation as requested.
  • Communicate vehicle mechanical issues to mechanics and supervisors immediately.
  • Operate truck and equipment using prescribed techniques to prevent driver-induced mechanical failures.
  • Follow all safety standards, equipment checks, and precautions in performing duties.
  • Eliminate driver-induced mechanical failures by operating the truck and equipment using prescribed techniques.
  • Maintain clean vehicle by cleaning the cab interior and exterior.
  • Manage assigned Helper(s) if applicable.
  • Exhibit a professional demeanor, manner, and appearance at all times.
  • Ensure accurate records of services performed.
  • Perform extra or special pick-ups as needed.
  • Complete route observations on all routes on a pre-determined basis, document findings, and provide reports to immediate supervisor.
  • Develop directions to new accounts.
  • Assist with training other Drivers.
  • Attend safety and branch meetings.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is desired.
  • A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.
  • At least one year of commercial driving experience or a CDL school certificate is required.
  • Must meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to Company standards.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to safely operate the truck and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the truck and its components and basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
  • Ability to control operations of equipment, maneuver into and out of minimum clearance spaces, and use mirrors to back distances of approximately 120 feet or more.
  • Ability to recognize unacceptable waste such as gasoline or other flammable materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Read, write, and comprehend associated documents and maps.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Flexibility to accept and adapt to change and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Ability to exert muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 pounds repetitively using proper lifting techniques.
  • Coordination of two or more limbs (for example: two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting or standing.
  • Ability to follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Physical/Mental Demands: Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell. Visual Requirements: include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus due to the constant maneuvering of the vehicle in tight and high traffic areas. Ability to regularly lift/move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds. Sitting is required 75% of the time due to the primary function of driving. Ability to work in usually loud conditions. Works route away from branch location on a continuous basis throughout the day. Occasionally work in high precarious places. Work in motor vehicle traffic conditions constantly. Work environment is usually loud.
