CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is available at the Office of Readiness and Response, Division of State and Local Readiness, Jurisdictional Readiness and Response Support Branch, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. To accomplish its mission, CDC conducts important science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise. Research Project: Through mentorship from CDC subject-matter experts, you will gain experience in public health emergency preparedness and response projects involving data management, analysis, and scientific writing. You will also gain exposure to how data and scientific evidence are used to inform jurisdictional preparedness and response activities and decision-making. Under The Guidance Of a Mentor Activities May Include Analyzing key informant interview data from existing readiness and response projects related to personal protective equipment distribution during the 2024 dairy cattle influenza A(H5N1) outbreak and/or state preparedness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.Analyzing data on emergency response technical assistance, housed in Salesforce, to improve support provided to jurisdictions during public health emergencies.Cleaning, managing, and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data using tools such as R, Excel, and other appropriate analytic software. Contributing to manuscripts, reports, presentations, or other scientific communications and participating in the review, clearance, publication, and dissemination of findings.Collaborating with Jurisdictional Readiness and Response Branch staff and other CDC researchers to coordinate analyses, interpret findings, and advance preparedness and response projects. Learning Objectives Develop an understanding of the complementary roles of the federal, state, tribal, local, and territorial agencies involved in public health emergency preparedness and response.Learn data management and analytic methods to public health emergency preparedness and response projects while considering data privacy, appropriate use, and dissemination requirements.Strengthen skills in collaborating and coordinating with public health researchers to efficiently advance preparedness and response projects.Gain familiarity with the publication and knowledge dissemination process at a federal public health agency, including scientific clearance. Through these activities, you will develop transferable skills in data management, analysis, scientific communication, and collaboration while gaining experience in jurisdictional public health emergency readiness and response. Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 1, 2026. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors. Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds. Level of Participation: The appointment is full time. Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Qualifications The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's or master's degree in the one of the relevant fields (public health, epidemiology, the medical field, health sciences, or allied sciences). Preference is on:Bachelor's received or;Master's received or pursuing. The degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
