CD&A Data Scientist, Obesity - Associate

About the role
This is a hybrid role requiring three days a week on-site in Thousand Oaks. The Data Scientist – Associate role within Commercial Data & Analytics (CD&A) is a hands-on analytics position supporting commercial strategy, performance measurement, and decision-making across Amgen’s portfolio. You will contribute to analytical projects addressing commercial business questions and work closely with cross-functional partners to deliver actionable insights. This position is designed for an early-career data scientist eager to develop technical capabilities, commercial understanding, and communication of analytical findings. You will work under the guidance of experienced team members while taking ownership of defined analyses and deliverables. The role does not have direct reports.
Responsibilities
- Support the development, maintenance, and enhancement of analytical solutions used in commercial decision-making, including forecasting inputs, patient and market segmentation, and performance analytics.
- Apply statistical and machine-learning techniques to structured commercial and healthcare datasets.
- Conduct exploratory data analysis, data preparation, feature engineering, and model evaluation.
- Assist with interpreting analytical results in the context of business objectives, data quality, and methodological limitations.
- Contribute to the documentation and quality review of analytical methods and outputs.
- Write and maintain SQL queries to extract, transform, and analyze data from enterprise data sources.
- Use Python and/or R to clean data, conduct analyses, and support the development of analytical models.
- Work within cloud-based analytics environments and use curated enterprise data assets.
- Support repeatable analytical workflows, code documentation, quality control, and model deployment activities.
- Develop dashboards, reports, and visualizations using tools such as Tableau or Spotfire.
- Troubleshoot data and analytical issues with support from senior team members and technology partners.
- Assist in translating business questions from marketing, forecasting, insights, and leadership teams into defined analytical tasks.
- Prepare clear summaries of analytical findings for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Support ongoing commercial reviews, planning activities, and ad hoc analyses.
- Collaborate with forecasting, insights, data strategy, and technology partners within CD&A.
- Build knowledge of the obesity market, Amgen’s commercial business, and the healthcare environment.
- Manage assigned analytical tasks and timelines in a fast-paced commercial environment.
- Apply structured problem-solving and attention to detail when completing analyses.
- Seek guidance when business requirements, data, or analytical results are unclear.
- Incorporate feedback from team members and business partners to improve analytical outputs.
- Follow applicable data governance, compliance, privacy, and documentation standards.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree OR Associate’s degree and 4 years of relevant experience, OR High school diploma/GED and 6 years of relevant experience.
Skills
- Working proficiency in Python and/or R.
- Experience using SQL and relational databases.
- Experience with Tableau, Spotfire, or a similar data visualization tool.
- Familiarity with cloud analytics platforms such as Databricks, Azure, or AWS.
- Foundational understanding of statistical modeling and machine-learning concepts.
- Experience preparing, cleaning, and analyzing large or complex datasets.
- Ability to summarize analytical findings clearly and connect them to business questions.
- Experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, or commercial analytics is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail, curiosity, and willingness to learn.
- Effective collaboration and communication skills in a matrixed organization.

Pay
The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
