About the Role

The Cardiac Cath Lab Invasive Specialist-Certified plays multiple roles on the Cardiac Cath Lab team, demonstrating technical proficiency in all procedures and equipment. You will apply anatomical and physiological knowledge to assist Cardiologists or Electrophysiologists in delivering high-quality cardiac patient care. Responsibilities include maintaining communication with the Cath Lab team, ensuring proper equipment setup, accurate monitoring, and quality data collection.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate technical proficiency in all cardiac catheterization procedures as a Cardiac Cath Lab Invasive Specialist.
• Correctly identify cardiac structures, coronary vasculature, and associated disease processes.
• Practice radiation safety and adhere to ALARA principles, including compliance with Texas Bureau of Radiation Control and Methodist Radiation Safety Committee regulations.
• Assist physicians in obtaining or entering data into Physiologic Monitoring Systems for accurate hemodynamic pressure measurements.
• Ensure accurate calculation of intra-cardiac shunts, valve areas, and pressure measurements.
• Accurately report Ejection Fraction and assess cardiac function using Left Ventricular Analysis programs.
• Understand disease processes affecting cardiac function, such as Coronary Artery Disease, Cardiomyopathy, Myocardial Infarction, and Valvular disorders.
• Ensure angiographic and procedural data is properly archived for long-term storage.
• Verify the presence of all procedure information components in both hard copy and computerized formats.
• Handle contrast agents and other non-controlled medications as appropriate for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
• Take "Call" on a rotating basis.
• Support the mission and vision of the Methodist Healthcare System and comply with safety policies and procedures.
• Adhere to the MHS Code of Conduct and report any activity that appears to violate applicable laws or ethical standards.
• Complete other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School graduate or GED.
• One of the following (for new hires as of 6/1/2013):
  • Two (2) years full-time Invasive Cardiovascular Technology experience.
  • An Associate Degree or equivalent college hours (62 semester hours) in health, science, natural science, nursing, engineering, or any primary science.
  • Graduate of an accredited (by CHEA, USDOE, or CMA) program in Invasive Cardiovascular Technology.
  • Graduate of a NON-programmatically accredited program in Invasive Cardiovascular Technology with a minimum of one (1) year of specialty training and 800 clinical hours.
• Initial and ongoing training and competencies specific to the needs of the patient population served, including:
  • Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization
  • Peripheral Angiography
  • PTCA, Stent implantation
  • Aspiration/Extraction devices
  • Distal Embolization Protection devices
  • PTA and Peripheral Stent implantation
  • Vascular Closure devices
  • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump
  • Temporary Transvenous Pacing
  • Implantable Defibrillators/Pacemakers (Elective/Emergent basis preferred)

Qualifications

• Preferred: One (1) year (full-time or full-time equivalent) in Invasive Cardiovascular Technology.
• Preferred: Baccalaureate in health, science, natural science, nursing, engineering, or any primary science AND six (6) months of (full-time or full-time equivalent) in Invasive Cardiovascular Technology.

Certifications

New hires must have ONE of the following certifications:

• Current certification-eligible Cath Lab Technicians must successfully pass RCIS/RCES exam within 18 months of start date.
• RCIS (Registered Cardiac Invasive Specialist) from CCI (Cardiovascular Credentialing International).
• RCES (Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist).
• ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists).
• RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist).
• NREMT-Paramedic.
• EMT.
